Hia folks

I've decided to buy Civ 5. So far I've played only Civ III* but now I'd like to try 5. Problem is, I don't know which to get! I went to Amazon, but there are multiple packs and/or expansions... can someone explain which is the most complete/recente?

*I don't count the 6 hours of Civ IV I played...

Buy Civilization 5 with Gods and Kings. Don't bother with the DLCs, because those aren't necessary [especially for a beginner].

The Basic Game as Gold edition comes with all DLC but Korea and Wonders of the Ancient World and is usually the cheapest.

So
Gold + G&K + BNW + DLC-pack: Korea & Wonders of the Ancient World = 100%.

If you buy Gold edition you'll have everything that's been released for 50 dollars. Then if you want the new expansion that's coming out it'll be another 30, or 27 if you pre-order.

Get Gold edition if you have money. if not just purchase main game on steam. you may also get Babylon DLC, great science civ and totally worth it.

The Gold Edition is cheaper than buying Vanilla, G&K, and the DLCs separately. The Gold Edition includes everything released for CiV so far

If you can a few days/weeks, do so. Summer sale on steam is most likely around the corner (i.e. max a couple of weeks), and the gold edition (and the other versions probably as well) will most likely have a 75% discount then.

No thanks, I hate Steam...

Hang on, does the game need Steam to play?!

Fer...

I hate Steam, never works for me... dammit... guess Civ 5 is out for me...

Sorry to hear that. Personally, I have little problem with steam, but if it doesn't work that sucks. Civ 4 has no steam requirement (if you buy it in a normall shop). It can be bought on steam though.

I hate Steam not just because I always have problems. I hate the whole business model that it represents. I have to aske permission to play what I bought? And have to submit to playing how/when they want? Frak that.

Offline mode...

On topic, get Gold edition. Has everything in it.

I got the gold edition on eBay (or maybe it was amazon... I can't remember) for just $30 - which is like, a 40% discount. It includes the base game, G&K expansion, and all DLC available at the time it was made which includes Babylon, Polynesia, Denmark, Korea, Spain and Inca.

Steam isn't neccessary on the Mac version, you just download it from the Mac App Store. The Mac version doesn't allow DLC or online multiplayer though.
