Please use this thread to discuss the decisions you faced at the end of the Age of Exploration and starting the Modern Age.

Going into the Modern Age I think my aim will be fastest victory, which feels very GotM!

Accumulating legacy points in the modern current feels impossible as the age ends very rapidly.

With this in mind I think I will pursue a cultural victory, as this is currently possible to do very fast.

Will play as Mexico for the celebrations and the extra artefact slots from Bellas Artes. But I had unlocked almost everybody - including the Mughals (tempting for the insane purchasing power).

I finished the exploration age with the Normans around turn 110, maxing out militaristic and cultural legacy. I currently have 18 settlements, just a bit higher than the cap. Gonna start the modern age as Prussia and try to see how i can finish that.
For some reason I started the new age with dozens of military units. I guess I'm going to go use them against the neighbors.

Rome ---> Spain ---> America
I'm thinking Railroad Tycoon but who really knows (as I've only made it to the end once with a Military Victory). I almost made it with a science but couldn't get the Launch Satellite project to trigger and just gave up on the game. With the breadth of my empire, size of my cities (& attendant production) it sounds easy. Right? We'll find out...

Rome->Spain->America for me as well. I think I will just kill everything in sight and see what happens. I'm in happiness crisis at end of Exp Eage due to 24/17 settlements (of which 3 or 4 are cities, but that will get chopped down to 1 city when the Modern Age starts. What is the value of making settlements into cities when you can just buy anything anyhow? Not sure what I'm missing because it seems confusing... I thought cities would count for fewer?

Exploration went very well for me as Songhai. Turn 80 finish, 20 settlements, huge cultural infrastructure (was at 1162 per turn by the end, in part due to some legacy bonuses I picked), good chance of having ample resources in Modern, and the homelands are still basically a split between me and my pal Friedrich.

I unlocked Mughals and almost want to try pivoting my Songhai economy into Wonder cheese, but I don't have enough farms to make full use of the kit. I like the idea of keeping the culture train moving with Mexico and turning that gold into culture buildings across my towns. ...you know what, having an extra discount on culture buildings in towns with Mughals on top of the Wonders is just too silly to ignore. I have to see what happens. Here's hoping for a beautiful mess of a Modern Age.

I didn't understand that in the first games either. And then at some time I saw that you can't buy science and culture buildings in towns - you can only buy/build in cities.

And I think you can't kill everything. Technically it's easy, but the era counter will grow like crazy because of your war, and 100% will happen before you conquer the last city. So If you have less legacy points than someone else, you'll lose (lol).

I am just now getting ready to start the Modern age. 1.1.0 came out but I am going to avoid Great Britain, and the new Cultural Victory since it changed so significantly (I'll pick some up, but not focus on it). I’ve played France (Cultural victory) and America (Economic) in my previous games, and I want to try something new. I have been mostly peaceful except for an early war against Friedrich's Egypt, so I am going to try for a Science victory, but be prepared to shift to Military if the AI get in the way (I don't think that's likely, I have a major advantage in settlements from the last age). Both will require good production, so Prussia sounds interesting, I like the idea of the Staatseisenbahn for production, and Stukas if I need to go to war, air units are a lot of fun in modern warfare.

I have 3 legacy points for each area, I upgraded several towns to cities at the end of the last era so I can use the Treasure Fleet GA and keep 6 cities. I'll go through the rest of my legacies once I start the Modern age and look at the map.

My points selection for the French Modern Age:

I decided to keep Rouen as the capital, because it now has considerably more production than the next two candidates - Rome and Ravenna - combined.
The 1.1.0 patch dropped during the Exploration, so for the new Modern I think I'll try to get the updated Culture victory asap, see how it goes. I don't plan on doing any more wars if I can help it.
