Civilization 1 Game Speed

Select the game menu, then options and make sure you have "animations" shut off. I expect this is the problem you are having. The animations are intentionally slow, for some reason... I guess they thought it would be a good idea. Who knows.

I've read the posts here and none of them seem to cover exactly the problem I experience running Civ1 under Win2K (& indeed XP as well). Even with animations disabled, the movement of units is unusably slow. This doesn't happen (for instance) with Colonization.
Does anybody have suggestions for addressing this?

Run the program under DOS.

I cannot stress this enough. It is a DOS game after all.

No matter what operating system you have on your computer (as long as your computer is PC-compatible), then you can make a DOS boot disk, and set up your computer to boot off the disk.

On a pentium computer running in DOS mode, even on a slow pentium like my celeron 400mhz, Civ1 is so unbelievably fast  that I had to resort to using keyboard controls exclusively and moving the mouse from one side of the screen to the other was too slow and was slowing down everything I was doing by 500%. Units on Go practically teleported across the screen.

:goodjob:

It's the only Dos game of this vintage I know which displays this behaviour. Colonization and Master of Magic are fine in modern Windows environments if you disable sound.
Kind of hoped some bright spark had a fix somewhere.

I have posted this in another topic somewhere but will repeat it again (it might not work but it did for me!)

This is the exact same problem i had on my computer (win98, celeron etc). All i did was not use sounblaster sound, and instead use the PC speaker option on starting civ. also dont choose no sound as it went just slowly as with the soundblaster option.

also my game would absolutely refuse to run from the win98 dos prompt or dos restart but would work from win98!!!

Anyway, like i said before, it might work but it might just be my machine!!!
If i don't see you anymore in this world, i'll meet you in the next one..... don't be late!

it does work? Sweet.............

if anyone knows why it works faster in PC Speaker sounds than Soundblaster i would love to know just out of curiositys sake.....

actually its wouldn't be that suprising except for the 'no sounds' option running slower as well.

Glad to be of some help!

I tried setting the sound to "IBM Sounds" too it worked for me also. Thanks! I even bought CivNet on Ebay but the graphics to say the least are distastefull. I am playing CIV1 now and loving it! The simplicity compared to SMAC and CIV3 is great! I only have to clean up the pollution that I create! What a concept. I am glad the 1.17 patch is out for CIV3, but why should we be sooo thankfull for additions that were already in CIV1 and CIV2?
Anyway, thanks for the sound suggestion on CIV1.
I have an editor which I think might be usefull to anyone playing CIV1, it allows you to modify saved games , terrain values, unit values, leader attributes etc. If interested email me at babadger62@yahoo.com. It is not mine, but is very usefull. I give every terrain type an extra trade(commerce), which speeds the game up alot. I don't consider it a "cheat" because the AI get the same benefit.

Hi Babadger,

I have CivNet as well as Civ1 and I find the graphics very near the same.

In fact, CivNet has more music and for that reason I like it better.

I have never played the multiplayer part of CivNet, only single player.

I would be interested to know what you don't like about the CivNet graphics in relation to Civ1.

I have Civ1 for Windows. And I also have Civ2,Civ3, and, as I mentioned, CivNet. And like you, I love the straightforward basics of Civ1 (or CivNet).

But I find the CivNet graphics just a little bit better than Civ1. They seem clearer, I like using the mouse, and as I mentioned before, there is more music.

Hope you reply.

I'm not sure what to say other than I love CIV1! I'm sure the gameplay is the same as civnet and civ for windows. I am playing on a P4 and loving it! Isn't it funny how CIV1 came with an earth map and everyone is soo thrilled to have Mara's earth map for CIV3? Wow! CIV3 has sentry option for units! Sorry for the sarcasm but I don't understand the thrill of CIV3 finally able to have the unit options of CIV1.
