I just picked up the Civilization Board game (the new one from 2010) and I really enjoyed it. Are there any other players of that board game on these forums? Does anyone have the expansion pack and, if so, what do you think of it?

I got the expansion Fame and Fortune for xmas and so far I am very pleased with it. The investments are great (changing gold for advantages in other win objectives) and also nice with the Great Leaders that give you advantages (one time or always). On the minus side: found the Greeks to be much too powerful but that can be adjusted (I thought of reducing the new tech keep trade advantage to only on first and second level techs)

I've played the most recent board game only twice, and I wasn't too impressed with it. It felt like the game had too many components and thus I was juggling an awful lot (and without the computer to organize and access all of the information easily, it was more awkward to play). The battle system with drawn unit cards was interesting, but didn't feel very Civ-ish.

Cool, thanks for the info. I might pass on the expansion because not too many people are willing to play the game with me (not everyone I know enjoys long complicated board games).

I think there is a difference between an intricate game, a long game, and a game with a bunch of components that don't seem to really mesh well with each other and is just a book-keeping pain. Not to be too harsh, but I think the Civilization board game falls in that last category.

I love games like Puerto Rico, Power Grid, and Friedrich, all of which are far more involved than the average American-style board game or take a significant amount of time to play, but all the game components and rules work well together.

I have played the two Civilization board games for a while, but I was never to fond of them. Too much bookkeeping, way to long game and arbitrary strategies.

However, I recently got "Through the Ages" (yay X-mas!). Although it lacks a map, this game has somehow managed to have WAY more CIV-spirit than the "original" ones. Beside that it allows a lot of interesting strategic choises and has some refreshing random elements that make each game different. And the game mechanics: on the one hand, they all work so well that the whole game seems to be one finely tuned clockwork machine. On the other hand the are great abstracted ways to make time flow.

Don't bother with the CIV expansion - get TtA! So much fun to play!

Through the Ages is crack in boardgame form. I think I've played the game at least 70 times. Luckly for me I have friends with the same addiction.:p

I've played the FFG Civ twice. The tech system is nice, but I hate how you can just randomly draw a stronger unit then everyone else. It also feels like it has less strategic depth then Through the Ages, but takes twice as long.
