What about a civ1 democracy game ?

Here are the rules i propose:
Whenever a science is discovered, the citizens/players would vote so as to determine those variables of playing:
1. the new science to research (among those directly researchable)
2. the percentage tax/science (for what remains of trade once lux is determined)
3. the approbation rating: >75% or >50%, id est "we love king" or not (here, lux is determined)
4. the percentage military/improvements/wonder of our civilization "Mfg goods" (== shields)
5. the wonder to build (many cities may build that wonder with caravans, the percentage of cities being determined by "4." )
6. the type of governement
7. if we sould be at war or not with each known foreign civilization

About the questions 1,3,5,6,7, the majority would determine the answer.
About the question 2 and 4, the answer would be a mean/average.

Here's an example of what could propose a citizen in 4000BC:
1. Bronze working
2. science=100%
3. approabtion=50%
4. military=100%
5. wonder=none
6. (no choice here: only despotism available)
7. (no choice here: we met no one)

The citizen could debate in this thread before voting.

Two citizen should be elected to accomplish these two functions:
1. strategus:
* effectively plays the game according to the will of the people, as it (the will of the people) is published by the epistates
* decides on moving units and receiving emissaries
* when a science is discovered, stop playing, saves the game, writes the sciences proposed by the game, post here a civil*.map and a civil*.sve (a saved game) so that every citizen can study the situation, and opens the debate

2. epistates:
* closes the debate with a post after the legal limit of time and opens the vote
* closes the vote with a post after the legal limit of time, then publish the results in another post

If you want to become a citizen, post here and tell us:
1. when (in civfanatics time [GMT+2]) you can debate and vote
2. if you would like to be strategus, or epistates, or just citizen
3. if you agree/disagree with these rules
4. which level of difficulty you would like this game to be played
5. on which map: random, earth, customized
6. on which civ1: dos, win, mac
7. what you would suggest for the name of our civ, its leader, its cities

As "après le pain, l'éducation est le premier besoin du peuple", we could play civilization quiz between two votes - id est while the strategus is playing civ.

I really hate to say this but...
I've been in the civ2 demo game (quite active too: president and minister) and I think that the number of posters here is not enough to sustain a demo game. You need at least 10 people involved to keep it fun for everyone and you need a few people willing to invest a lot of time to get it going.
So although I think it's a great idea to have a Civ1 demo game I'm afraid it won't be possible to organize one in a succesful way. :(

Tis my turn to thank you for your post, Mongols rule. I would have said almost the same thing. :) This let me think... Oops, i forget to say i'd also like to join ! :mischief:
Here it is:

1. For civ, nearly anytime :D
2. epistates, as i'm a statistician-born living entity. but, why not strategus.
3. how strange, i wouldnot have said more
4. Emperor, because it's more interesting when we dont know in 4000bc if we will survive or not
5. Random, much more fun
6. DOS
7. no idea at this time

Zwelgje, i really hate to hear this. ;) So, why torturing each other and ourselves ?
Moreover, if you -rightfully- "think that it's a great idea to have a civ1 demo game", and if you -maybe not so rightfully - think that we "need at least 10 people involved". What's the right attitude ? To join, of course. ;)
Furthermore, to my mind, 7 or 5 citizen (maybe 3) is sufficient to have a good contradictory dispute. You've just to read any civfanatics thread to understand it is so. I think you already read some of those
If you're not sure, just add to your join-post an "in condition that we find x citizen", but, please, dont post such annoying remarks any more... :(
See you soon ! :)

Is this all done in fantasy? Or is the game actually used for anything?

Don't exactly know what you mean Jeremy but this game apperently never started.
Civ2 demo game stopped because of lack of people willing to play, only the civ3 crowd is big enough to keep going. With the activity at the civ1 forum you can guess how long the civ1 demo game would last. :(

I know it didn't. Just bored at work and wanting to know what a Democracy game is all about. I suppose I could read about the Civ3 Demo game.

What do you mean by it??
what is 3? Do we tell you how much WE love the king?
what do you mean by military/improvements/wonder shields???

Hey I'll join, although I have to confess that I don't get much time on the internet so I might not be around all the time. Sounds interesting though. I haven't even thought about CivI in a couple of years and now I really want to get home so I can play.

Hmm.. this *could* get started up again...

@JanSobieski: Would you mind answering the seven questions (end of the first post of this thread) ?

1. Anytime
2. Just citizen
3. I agree
4. Prince
5. Random
6. DOS
7. Don't care

If this actually got off the ground, I'd be interested, though I think it'll be more of an oligarchy game ;) I wouldn't want to be responsible for making moves at all, but I would rather enjoy relearning this classic and giving my opinions on various decisions.

I don't want to make the moves or anything...but I want to be able to have a say that actually means something.

Do you all understand how long this game could go on for? The pass-the-save-file-round game lasted a while and they still never finished. We need commitment people....or at least a continus supply of citizens...

TBH, I don't really think this is going to end up working, just because there isn't all lot of interest. As I say, I think we'd all be more or less pretty influential as it would be more of an oligarchy. I suppose if we actuall got it started with 10 people or so we could probably convince a mod or some such to advertise it in the news which would help. Anyway, I have played in a few democracy games and am familiar with the commitment. That there are fewer people may actually make things run more smotthly, though I suppose ties would be a bit more likely. I think if our numbers remain small enough, it might be interesting to have all votes done by posting, rather than by polls.

Hear Hear!

I want in!!!

1. Anytime
2. Just citizen
3. I agree
4. Emperor
5. Doesn't matter
6. DOS
7. I think it'd be much simpler to pick a pre-made civ, with standard leader & cities names (I suggest any of the following: French/German/Roman/American).

I'd also suggest the game be stopped for review by citizens not only when a new tech is discovered, but also when major decisions are to be made (for example: when about to launch a "do it or die trying" attack...)

I've never played a Demo game, so that is just my "outsider" suggestion...trying to forecast what could happen...but I could also be wrong.

I think we could start a game.
However, having not much free time at this time, i think it would be better i withraw my candidacy for any of the two elected fonctions and ask all the citizen once again:
Would anybody like to be strategus or epistates ?
