On the Von Braun
Back in March of this year I got my second tattoo... This time around, however, it was from a game that I don't think has ever been inked before. I introduce the "Civilization II Modern City Tattoo!"
The Ink, in the tattoo parlor, upon completion
Civilization II (and the entire Civilization series, for that matter, comprising a total of seven games (one of which was a spin-off of the series), has played a huge role in my life, practically standing alongside Tetris (my first tattoo) in terms of impact. A big piece of Civilization's impact on me resides in my unending thirst for knowledge; the game taught me over the years to truly appreciate history on both a global and local scale. And since you "create history" by leading your civilization through time towards success on the global scene, you can learn just how important each event in time really is and how one person can make a difference.
The choice of the modern-age city at the largest size was picked because I felt it was an ideal representation of my city, NYC, where I was born and raised. In addition, the modern-age city captures the idea of history with it's subtle building choices: tenements and old apartments in the foreground and modern-age skyscrapers in the background, symbolizing the organic growth of many multi-centurial cities in the world.
And the last feature is the City Wall that surrounds New York! Yup, it's historically unrealistic, but when a City Wall in Civilization II bolsters a 50% defense bonus against barbarians, why would you not build it? Again, in a nod to my passion for video games, this element was preserved in the final design.
Here are two other pics:
Kinda blurred out by outdoor lighting, but CivII is on the monitor
Lastly, the GIF that this tattoo is based on:
