Does anyone know what the rules are in Civilization 2 regarding the yields on the city tile? I have googled, searched this forum, searched the original manual, and searched the "Civilization II: The Official Strategy Guide", and have not been able to find anything explicit. Apologies if I missed it somewhere. I have experimented in the game, which has helped, but I'm looking for somewhere/something that describes the exact rules, without me experimenting and guessing.

As an example, if you settle a city on a grassland tile, which normally yields zero shields, the tile will then yield 2 shields for the city after it has been settled. Is there anywhere where these city tile yield rules are explicitly documented?

Thanks in advance if anyone has any info.

Can only be seen in the game code apparently
In the original version of Civ2, under a city, a cell receives the base resource of food/production/trade, which it has from the rules.txt file, and also receives a bonus from irrigation if one is allowed to be built on the cell. If on a tile under a city irrigation cannot provide additional food, then only then is a condition added to check for the ability to receive a shield from the effect of the mine. For example, a Glacier or a Mountain does not give a bonus from irrigation, so the city receives +1 shield on the Glacier (as from a mine), and on a Mountain +2 shields (one basic terrain and one from a mine), at the same time, since on the Hills irrigation gives +1 food, a city on such a square will receive only 2 food (+1 from irrigation and +1 food from the base landscape). But there is one more condition: if the landscape under a city cell does not give a single shield, then such a cell will still give +1 shield, so in the end a city on the Hills gives +2 food and +1 shield, and in the Tundra +2 food and +1 shield
In the meadows, the city should only give one shield, unless you use double production in the game settings
Despotism reduces any resource by one if there are more than 2 of them in a cell

The ingame Civilopedia has a note exactly about that. Choose menu Civilopedia - Game Concepts - City Squares:
The resources utilized by a city are not only generated in the squares surrounding the city: they are also generated by the city square itself. The city square generates all the resources normally produced by the Terrain type on which the city is built. In addition, the Terrain square occupied by the city is improved to the maximum extent possible. The city square automatically contains a road, which is upgraded to a railroad when the Railroad Advance is discovered. The city square is also automatically irrigated or mined, depending on the type of terrain. Finally, if the city is built on Terrain that normally produces no Shields, one Shield is automatically added to the other resources generated in the city square. These enhancements ensure that the city square produces the maximum amount of resources possible.

Thank you so much! Somehow I missed that in the Civilopedia. That is exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks, that is helpful, although I was really trying to find somewhere where the city square yield rules are documented in some sort of official/definitive/incontrovertible way. I saw the other response regarding the documentation from the Civilopedia, which is what I was looking for. Thank you though, your info helps corroborate my understanding of these rules.
