Is there going to be a Civ III multiplayer Ladder? This would a fun and excellent idea for the community. I would suggest some sort of scoring system based on wins, placings, # of players in the recorded game, and eventually ranks.

You could have different types of challenges (normal, vendettas, rank swaps, etc...). There might even be an additional way scoring based on the kind of win vs. the actual goal.

This would also help establish a set of fair 'rules' for multiplayer play and be a good meeting place for honest serious/casual players.

We should probably have a forum here specifically for multiplayer topics with a sub-forum dedicated to the Ladder. In fact, opening that up right now might now be a bad idea.

A Multiplayer Ladder is a basically a set of rankings based on competitive multiplayer performance. The term ‘ladder’ comes from the way players can move up and down the ranks by fighting their way up or slipping down. Most multiplayer games set up ladders as follows:

Ranks: Based on overall percentage and competition level. Requirement for high ranked players to have a minimum number of matches against other high ranked players within a given period of time or risk slipping down the ladder. All challenges from lower ranked players must be accepted.

Matches: Typically a minimum amount of activity is required to be listed on the ladder (ranked). Matches, and all of the specific match, rules must be agreed upon by both players. Results can only be contested because of external factors. If a match isn’t reported within a certain amount of time, it doesn’t count. All challenges from lower ranked players must be accepted within the constraints of a max number of matches per reasonable period of time.

Challenges: All challenges from lower ranked players must be accepted. There would be different types of challenges. Typical 1 vs. 1, n vs. n (with placing counting for or against your ranking), Vendetta (best of 3 with special rank incentives), rank swaps, and several other types. Challenges have to be announced or atleast told to the ladder admin some period of time in advance and only count if both players are members of the ladder at the time (you would be amazed at the headaches this avoids).

There are a few more general and specific details. It might no be a bad idea to run such a ladder from here, at least at first. If anybody has questions, please ask! If I don't know, I can find out.
