Both in CIv 5 and 6 players could only play multiplayer games if they shared the same version of the game, meaning if you did not have all the DLCs you could only play base game even if the host had the full roster of content.
This in the past has caused a lot of issues for my friends and me in terms of managing to play civ in multiplayer as DLCs came out and we purchased them at different paces. For instance, I have been trying to set up a CIV 5 game with colleagues before CIV 7 comes out after discovering we are all civ-loving nerds, but it turned out we all have different DLCs making the planning of a multiplayer session a nightmare trying to cater to everyone's preferences and available content.

By contrast, Paradox games enable players to play with whatever DLC the host owns. From my experience, this has led to more purchases of DLCs as people end up wanting to try the new mechanics in single-player after having a go in multiplayer and in general keeps interest in a game within a group high if we can end up playing together as content comes out.

After all, civ is primarily a single-player game, I highly doubt enabling players to play with whatever DLC the host owns would cause any loss in sales and if anything it would promote the purchase of DLC by players in my opinion.

In conclusion, do we know if CIV 7 will similarly restrict multiplayer games?

What's the take in this forum regarding having content owned by the host be available to all in a multiplayer session?

I agree restrictions on different owned content should not be there anymore.

Shared content by the host sounds like a dream 2K will certainly destroy.
