Civilization IV for PS3 / XBox 360?

I think that a Civ 4 port to the new consoles could be done, but I wonder if there's enough of a market to make it worthwhile. The consoles have traditionally not been big markets for strategy games.

I agree with Good Omens. A large percentage of console owners are "casual" gamers - happy to put in 20 minutes after getting home from the pub but not the sort of investment necassary for Civ.

There'd be some good points to a console Civ (no problems with ATI drivers for example), I'd certainly give it a try but I'm not sure the profitatbility for Firaxis/2K is there.

people thought FPS's couldn't be done well with a controller till Halo came along.

 Halo sucked (in more ways than one) just as bad as any other console shooter. The "controller" will never be better than the 'ol mouse and keyboard. FPS just do not belong on consoles. I remember trying Halo 2 & CoD on XBox after years away from consoles and years of playing PC shooters... Never. Again. :wallbash:

What ticks me off is when we get ports from the consoles that have terrible controls thanks to the restrictiveness of controllers. Look no further than CoD2. I know it's not a straight port, but take a look at some of the controls that were cut out of the game, which certainly leads me to believe that was done purposely to suit a controller. I call shenanigans.

As for Civ4, or any Civ or strategy game for that matter, it might look good on my 50" LCD HDTV, but I couldn't justify paying that much money for a console just to play one game I actually want. Consoles offer me nothing, since I'm only into FPS's, racing sims, and strategy games.

Disclaimer: Most of the above is just my opinion.

Graphically Civ4 might stress the current gen enough that it would be hard to make, but I know civ4 uses the same graphics engine as pirates and it worked out very well for xbox. In anycase you have to consider that the current gen already is dead.

For Next gen Civ4 will just make the console look like crap, I mean graphically it will be well below other games and you would need HDTV to play civ4 with a decent amount of detail. Plus the mouse and KB thing will be a pain, but the upside is that if it was made for xbox360 the multiplayer would be awsome since it would use xboxlive.

I would perfer to see Civ2/3 for windows mobile instead.

NICE IDEA! Civ3 for Windows Mobile 2003 :) Not sure if my rx3715 has the gusto to handle that though :)

FWIW Civ 2 worked just fine on playstation.

That's quite the generalization. Many console games require just as much of an investment as Civ... also many people play both console games and pc games, shocking I know. ;)

If any Civ game comes to the console, I want it to come out on the DS, not Civ 4, but a remake of Civ 3 or something.

The DS would be prefect for the differnt menus and stuff.

If civ 3 did come out on the DS, i would then buy one

how great would that be?

Sorry for the stereotype-reinforcing (I don't want to spread any hate), I myself own and play consoles I certainly know how much input some console games require (anyone played Wacky Races on DC?).

Perhaps I should have said a 'significant minority' but whatever the numbers are, its undeniable that consoles have greater mass market appeal that PCs and therefore attract more casual gamers.

Not if I have a 6 ft x 5 ft HDTV wall screen to play it on! (Which I don't)

Until they can assume everybody has one of those, they can't take advantage of it. Otherwise, you end up with a console game with minimum system requirements, and we all know how well that works on the PC...
