I have seen the trailer for civilization online MMORPG or whatever, since the previous trailers for other games have not had anything in common with the actual finished game, I really really really really really really hope that the gameplay/graphics don't turn out like that. I have seen to many terrible games using a similar platform and I generally dislike the format it is using. I normally find these new crazy round engines to be really sloppy or loose around the edges and lack of any sort of form if you must say.

What really intrigues me is the name XL. Seriously it is a repeat of history when a great company called Monte Cristo who wanted to restore the glory of the dead Sim city, where basically he took a game and made it a MMORPG. What happened was simply that Monte Cristo put all his eggs in one basket and was hoping to get a fortune for his revolutionary Cities XL game that basically made a city simulator into a MMORPG. Ironically the XL part of the name sounds exactly the same as this new project. They are making the exact same mistakes as Monte Cristo because simply Civ was not that successful in online play till the 4th game. What scares me even more is what happened to the company who went out of business for lack of sales and lack of online participation.... I probably won't buy the game either because of the general dislike of the style that brings lots of issues with path finding. I may be being skeptical but honestly it is SO risky to just go all out like that. I know these are very good developers but good developers don't simply stay good forever.

Death of the Civ franchise? MAYBE if this game kind of screws up big time.

Relax. It's different developers, a different genre, and a very very different game from the main Civ series. There is no way it will ever be responsible for the end of all Civ games.

Yeah it pretty much has nothing to do with Civilization except the name and maybe some vague 'inspiration' and when it fails no harm will be done. Especially since it will be designed for an entirerly different audience, that of the f2pay and grind loving Asian market.

Remember that one time the expansion for CivV was canceled because CivWorld was awful?

Make no mistake. Americans are just as grind-loving. Why else do people punish themselves with Runescape and WoW?

Both of those games have large amounts of international players too.

A number of westerners do love grinding yes, but games designed for the majority of the market in Asia are much, much more grindy and gamey and just generally an unimmersive and predatory product. I'm not sure what is more disturbing, how much those games are designed to nickel and dime their players to death rather than creating an immersive and meaningful gameplay experience, or how that is what most of the market there expects/demands and actually wants to play.
