Civilization- The Board Game

Gee, it's only been 5 minutes. ;) I haven't played it, no, but I have looked at the reviews at Amazon. However, I'd prefer civ anyday - there's no way they can make the board game as detailed.

Welcome to CFC. This is not a chat room, so don't expect lightning answers. (although you may get some from the people that spend their lives at CFC) :mischief:

I've never played it, but I've seen someone try to play it, and... they never got started. They had to punch out those little pieces first. ;)

yea, its actually an extremely detailed game, much like the computer version if it is played with the advanced rules.

a group of friends and i play it every weekend, and im not to bad, but i always seem to lose eventually, and im looking for some help!

There are two of them. The first one was made before the computer game and is a classic. The computer game is partly inspired by this game. The second is very recent and is based on the computer version.

Personally, I have only played the first one but I really liked it. It is mainly a trading game, less a wargame. Beware that proper enjoyment comes only with many players (5+) and many hours( a full game with max players takes approximately 10 hours). I have not played the new game but I have heard decent things about it.

ive played the sid myers version, i dunno which one theat is.

i think its the one with the movement phase, then the trade phase, then the production phase, then the purchase phase.

if this is the same one u've played Bingen, which is ur fav place to start???

I've played it and say I much prefer the multiplayer of Civ3, on LAN where my firewalls don't interfere.

can anyone give me some strategy help on the board game?

and please dont post and just tell me that u have never played it, i would prefer posts from some one who has played.

and sry bout the -10 minute reply thing Turner727, wont let it happen again ;-)

I've played the boardgame a wile back, took the whole weekend but it was great fun.

as for strategy try to get the tecs that mak units, then everyone has to pay $ to you and you have more options every turn.

I have played both: the original Avalon Hill game (out of print, but available on eBay, or new from France at some speciality strategy gaming stores) and the recent 'Sid Meier's version, which is waaay inferior to the original IMHO. I didn't enjoy the latter enough to play it more than a few times. I think the best chance of winning (as long as nobody was warmongering...) was to buy as many techs as possible and getting a technology victory. But it may depend on how many people you are playing with...

I'd prefer Monopoly to the new civ boardgame, but the original is really a blast with a large group of (patient) friends! You should try and find a copy. :goodjob:

Hey thanks for the help.

I'll have to try and find the original, it sounds alot more like the computer Civilization (which ROCKS!!). It seems everyone is suggesting the technologies as a good strategy. I think my problem was I was way too militaristic.

But anyway, thanks for the help! (Could someone give me a quick run-down of the original civilization board game to me before I go buying it?)

It's been a very long time since I played (~20 years...) but I recall lots more technologies, governments(?), and some cool natural disasters and civil uprisings! I think the world was restricted to the Ancient World around the Mediterranean. And you get to choose a historical civ, IIRC.

I found a page w/more info via google:

ive still got the original although i lost the instructions (grr!). believe it or not its a decent family game because the rules are simple, easy to remember, and low stress. in spite of all this it can be very strategic and loads of fun. i recommend either 4 players playing 2 civs each or 7-9 players. i think the game says it shouldnt be played with more than 7 but more crowding makes the game better. it does take about 10 hours to play. do not be dismayed with its simplicity. its a very fun game for which good strategy pays. its kind of interesting that that game was the inspiration for me and a friend of mine getting into the computer game. we played it and later when i got a computer i asked my friend what game he recommended. he said "well i know you liked civilization so you should try sid meier's civ II!" we both became hooked quickly on the computer game. this same friend got me into civ III. or was it my brother? well both actually :)
