Civilizations for Nintendo DS?

Civilization could easily be played by a 10 year old. I taught my younger cousin who is 9 how to play Civ, and he didn't have any trouble picking it up at all. He may be slightly smarter than average, but he is certainly a normal kid, not the next Bobby Fischer or anything like that. Civilizations is in many ways similar to chess, most children could learn it and play it competently, but it may take a little more maturity (for most people) to master it. Who's to say an 8 year old wouldn't have as much fun playing Civilizations on chieftain difficulty on her Nintendo DS as a 30 year old would have playing it on Deity on his fancy high end computer?

As to whether an adult would want to play Civ on a Nintendo DS... I would say YES! I'm 29 and I bought a Nintendo DS the first day it came out. I think its great, I play it as I commute to work on the train. My boss who is 35 has a Gameboy Advance, that he plays it on the train as well. My brother-in-law who is 25 received a NDS for his birthday from his fiancée. I don't think I need to go on...

If Civ came out on any portable, I would buy the system to play the game. (I bought a laptop to play Civ3).

If the target is adolescent male, then why are there so many games aimed at kids?

Read through the games list. Without the 18 and under demographic the DS wouldn't have been released. The Sony PSP is aimed at the older guys, despite Nintendo's pleas that the DS is also. It certainly has potential, but right now it's very much built around the kids.

Metroid is for 10 year olds? Super mario 64 doesn't appeal to adults? Puzzle games and Rpgs are for kids only? I'm an adult and I enjoy all those games and I can tell you I would also play Civ for DS. The DS hardware is also not something built for kids. Stylus touchscreens are not very kid like at all. The unit is very sleek and adult looking to me. It's not like the GBA. Actually, how about Civ on the GBA in addition to the DS? The graphics are dated, but then so are the graphics of the original civ, and as I recall there was a SNES civ game. So why not port civ to the GBA?

I will grant you that blood and gore and sex are missing from DS games at the moment, but I don't care about that stuff in my games anyway.

Compare the DS games to the PSP games. End of story. ;)

If you can't admit that the DS ON THE WHOLE relies on the younger demographic, then there's little point in discussing this. Again, I'm not saying that the DS is for kids or that all games on it are for kids. But the system itself is geared towards them - again x2, if there were no kids who wanted or played the system then it would not exist.

Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree because I don't think the DS is geared towards children. Anyway, Civ could be considered a kiddie game because it is given an E rating.

The rating of games refers to the 'acceptability' of their content for all audiences, not who they're geared for. The average age of players of Civ is much higher than most games, even ones with "worse" ratings.

A port to the DS would be a great option, and that might be why I end up buying one.(If it happens) also, I've played the DS and it has this little dohickey that goes on your thumb to let you use the touch screen without a stylus. The only game I've played on it(Metroid) would be impossible if you were trying to use a stylus.

My point is games don't have to have blood, guts, and sex to appeal to Adults. In fact, personally, I don't much care for GTA or games like that.

Since the summer I've been able to play the original DOS Civ on my Pocket PC. through either DOSBox or PocketDOS. It's one of the coolest things in a long time. Also, Pocket Humanity was released for the Pocket PC not too long ago - it's a Civ clone.

Check the screenshots section - this game is hella fun. It's just a shame that the .NET framework is so slow.

"...The original Game Boy system featured a break down of about 33% of the owners as 18 years old or older; on the SP, that number is 45%.

Nintendo anticipates selling through 20 million Game Boy Advance units, both original and GBA SPs, by the end of this year.

While it's talking about the GBA/SP, you would think the numbers would be even higher for the DS.

I think a Civilization game would go well with the DS :).

Plus the DS is outselling the PSP in Japan, which is pretty bad considering this was the same week the PSP was launched, you'd think the PSP would at least do better on it's launch than a system that's been out a few weeks.

This is another reason to bring civ to the DS because the market is going to be huge for it. Yes, maybe alot of the players are kids, but when I was a kid I enjoyed Civ 1 very much, and I'm sure there are plenty of adult players also.

This thread sort of turned into a discussion of whether the NDS was more for kids or adults. I think there is enough of an 'adult/teen/mature older child' audience for the DS to justify a game like civilizations.

So lets assume the demographics are there to justify making a Civilizations game for the NDS. The hardware of the NDS is well suited for a turned based strategy game. If they build it we will buy it, and they will make a profit.

Yes, this would be the deciding factor if I get a DS before a PSP. The DS is lacking in my style of games, and this one game would make me want it enough to pour out $150 bucks, plus another $30 for the game. Easy. :D
