CivilopediaIV = F-

What about the fact that you better know what the icon means? I know that things are listed alphabetically, but it still takes longer than a list...

What disappoints me about the Civilopedia is that you can't right click on Units/Buildings in the City Screen anymore to get quick access. It seems to me that in Civ III you could almost click anywhere for such info.

I found this to be a really annoyance as well. Also, in the diplomacy screen it appears that F12 (Civilopedia) doesn't work, so I can't get help on items being proposed.

Also hate the icons instead of the lists, and not having an index. And does there also seem to be less hyperlinking?

Sheesh, Firaxis, didn't anyone in all the development find this to be a step backwards? I mean, 3D and all the animations are nice, but the Civilopedia is the cornerstone of the features. Surely someone must have said, "Gee, isn't this harder to use than in Civ3"? I would have wished to have a better Civilopedia than Spock, err, Leonard Nimoy ;).

Man I hope they seriously improve the pedia! One of the reasons I like the Civ franchise so much is the fact that you can actually learn some useful things by playing it bc of the pedia featured articles on historical backgrounds.

Surprising that there was no mention of the sucky Civilopedia by any of the in-depth previews made by the beta testers here and in other places as well. I believe it will be a good game (don't have mine yet) but did have this "too good to be true" sense while reading some of those previews.

Probably the previewers weren't concerned with such unsexy features as the Civilopedia, despite the reality that most of us spend a lot of time with it as we start a new Civ title (and thereafter, too). They probably felt their time was better spent focusing on the big impressive things like nukes.

That's not meant as a knock, by the way -- were I in their shoes, I would probably also have wanted to focus more on the glossy stuff in my write-up. And maybe they DID examine the Civilopedia, saw its problems, assumed they'd be easy to fix (and therefore actually be fixed), and didn't want to worry us.

Well, the beta testers and reviewer probably assumed things like this would be fixed, they are easy fixes it seems, just take a bit of time. Fortunately, I think that they will be fixed one way or another. The thing we won't have fixed or be able to fix is the 'right click on anything' abilities that were in CivIII. I think that we should be able to fix the content of the Civilopedia though, ie change icons to words, add words to entries, maybe even add secions and make/fix links.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the game; HATE the 'pedia. Asside from not having enough info, my issues are with the icon images instead of text writing and the lack of hyperlinks in the entries. The back button functionality doesn't seem correct either.

Again I love the game but not the civilopedia.

If the civilopedia is the worst thing, I think we're ahead of the game, so to speak.

Still, I hate it. The Civ III 'pedia was much better. Icons are useless unless you're already familiar with the subject. I need text. And no cross-references??!?

Yeah... and the Civilopedia makes Catherine a big dirty slut that apparently slept with 1/2 of the Russian military and the French philosophes as well.

There are tons of other errors, but that really ticked me off. It's one thing to have Catherine suggestively wink to me -- it's a completely different story to have 1/2 of her historical entry focused on her sex life. I feel like I should become a Womens' Studies major now.

who woulda thunk we would have to become programming experts just to play a game in this day and age? I can not believe al the bugs. half of us cant even get the game to start! this is the biggest flop in gaming history.

:eek: :eek: if the civopedia were the worst thing? LMAO, where have you been the last 24 hours? take a look around the boards.

I agree, the Civilopedia sucks. For christ's sake, just make it a text only searchable thing if you have to, it would work so much better.
