Civlization IV Complete no longer works

Previously, I had no problems using Civ Iv. recently I was infected with a virus and forced to reinstall XP. Since then, after installing CIv 4 it will not work. As it loads, I receive the "civ 4 failed to initialize renderer" error. I have tried everything and nothing works. How did reinstalling XP cause this issue and what can I do to fix it?

after you reinstalled XP did you reinstall the game or was this just a repair installation of XP?
