Hi all,

I have not been playing civ for a while now, but I'm excited to give BNW a go.

There was a really neat tweak for one of the previous civ games (II or III) which would make civs start out in regions of the map and climates most correct for them. So, England would start off in a temperate climate in the northern hemisphere on an island, Russian in northern sub-tundra in the middle of a great land mass, Egypt near a river running through a desert roughly in the middle of the map...etc... Hope you guys get the drift. There was also something there which linked civs based on culture - so when playing as an African or Middle Eastern civ, your immediate continental neighbors were also from that part of the (real) world.

For the life of me I can't find it anywhere. Hope this wonderful script/tool passed the test of time. :D

Whoa, whoa, whoa, the script is nowhere near that detailed. As England, there's no guaranteeing you'll end up in a temperate region in the northern hemisphere on an island, just that you'll be guaranteed a coastline. You won't necessarily be on a huge continent as Russia in the northern taiga, just that you'll be sure to spawn in a tundra. I've never heard of the other script you mentioned in-game, though it is a mod.

I would like this to be an option to select. I hate starting in a region unrelated to the Civ I am playing or if you are a sea power in the middle of a large landmass.

Gedemon has made a 'Culturally Linked Start Locations' mod which you can search for in the mod browser, but it disables the (terrain) start bias option. I guess to have a lot of criteria going on at once is difficult to make work.
The default biases for the in-game civs always consists of just one thing.

Thanks guys, perhaps it was just my good luck that (when using the previously mentioned script)civs started out not just in correct climates, but also in regions of the map most appropriate for them.

Yeah, it would be nice if this was a "stock" feature - hope it happens in the next version of the game.

Cheers!

Unless you're the Dutch, that probably won't happen. Can you give me examples of Civs with whom this has happened?

In several games playing as Venice, I had an inland starting location with city-states more than 20 tiles away. Gondolas (enhanced work boat, maybe 25% bonus) would be a good UU for Venice.

Looks like some bug in the script, I've never had any personal problems with Venice. I have been far away from other City-States, though. No advanced options or mods used?

Why has no one in this topic mentioned this exists already in game as default?

They aren't as specific as the TC says, and the starts aren't linked, but nearly every civ has a start bias.

Some of them
Iroquois- Forest
Brazil- Jungle
Russia-Tundra
Polynesia, Carthage, Venice etc- coastline

just to name a few. Its called start bias and it is enabled by default at the start of the game.

I did mention that. Read my first post.

Yeah, we knew that - it's just that I was hoping for a script/mod that added even more specific criteria to civ placement - like on a large land mass, on a large island, in the northern or southern hemisphere...etc...

Oh well though - the culturally linked starting locations mod is working great for me at least.
