Ah yeah, I just can't seem to get into a SG long enough to follow it all the way through. I usually do better lurking after the game has already finished.

If you're facing an AI stack of doom that's just entered your territory then plonking down a radar tower can really help. If you're trying to whittle down a stack from 50+ units then a small bonus is very valuable. Radar towers are actually used by the AI a lot, so the real use of them is in giving the human player more to think about when invading AI territory.
