Collateral Damage

Hey guys,
How does collateral damage work in Realism Invictus ? I see my catapaults don't deliver any collateral damage instead they offer siege aid? There's no info that I could find what siege aid does?
Is collateral damage something that comes later on in the game or something I have to research for?
Thanks 👍

In RI artillery system/collateral damage is completely revised, the manual explains it quite clearly

 Siege units. Siege units work much differently from vanilla game. Rams of all kinds have almost no strength, so they are close to useless in direct combat – the only real use they have is bringing down city defenses. Later catapults and trebuchets can more or less successfully attack units, but can’t bring them down all the way to 0%. Gunpowder artillery, starting with bombards, can perform ranged strikes on enemy units instead of a head-on confrontation. Generally, they will not be able to kill enemy units that way (functionally this is very similar to how bombers work). They will still defend in the classical manner if attacked. Also, there is now a separate class of immobile heavy artillery that will be emplaced in cities – with their ranged attacks, these guns can attack any besieging forces.

Collateral damage now comes from charging heavy cavalry, flanking light cavalry and some unique units depending on your civ.

Hm - yes, the cavalry mostly survives and racks up xp, I wouldn't start the attack with them, leading with (city raider) irregulars is often a good idea, send the cavalry in when the enemy is softened a bit.
