Colonies III PBEM game

The Iroquois note with interest the long guns of their French cousins approach Shawnee city. After their defeat of the Shawnee, our braves' blood is up - we hope there will be no unfortunate incidents, and counsel our friends to remove temptation from our warriors....

A few skirmishes in the woods with other tribes, but otherwise little of interest. A big raid is now planned on the Cherokee, but we know that they will be a tougher enemy than the Shawnee.

Our Fur and Tobacco caravans are still standing by. If our English or French friends like to contact us over the magic net, we can negotiate their transfer...

Of course our Iroquois brothers have nothing to fear from our forces. This is a protective measure for our exploring team. Your indians are welcome to meet our soldiers and talk to them. We are sure your warriors have learned the fine French language from our missionaries. We hope you will prefer our language to English as also the Huron’s are very eager to learn French and this way soon we can communicate all together for the sake of peace and prosperity. Learning our language would also improve our trading possibilities as you could acquire the finest French goods in exchange for furs tobacco and of course your magic mushrooms :D (These mushrooms don't get out of my head hmmm)

May the cultural exchange between our people lead to peace and harmony.

King Markus XIV.
Ruler of France and all oversea possessions

My French cousins.....

Of course your explorers are welcome in Iroquois lands, to sit around our fires, smoke the pipe of peace and, who knows...nibble on a sacred mushroom or two...;)

We hope you will respect the womanly fears of our squaws if we insist that you leave your metal-tubes-that-breathe-fire (or "canons" as I believe you call them in your strange tongue), at least one full league away from our settlements.

To transfer our furs and other goods to your possession, we need to meet in the spirit world. For that, you will need the usual copious supply of mushrooms and an "AIM userid" (whatever that is).

The sun will move across the sky once more, then our people will be ready. The next favourable time will be in four days hence. We are prepared to wait, but know ye that others covet our fine goods, as well as you....

A price, by the way, has yet to be agreed.

Chingachook, Chief Talker for the Iroquois Confederacy of Nations.

Lisbon Taken!

Following a massive bombardment, Spanish troops have stormed the Portugese capital. The Spanish Government is proud to report that Spanish troops did not loot anything from their fellow pious Catholics.

Antwerp Reoccupied

Following the Dutch withdrawal, Spanish troops have reocupied the city of Antwerp. The city was found to be in remarkably good shape given that it has be occupied by godless republicans for the last few years.

Some of our generals have smoked a little too much pipe recently, and they seem to have wandered off...

He's baaaaack! [dance]

Thanks for filling in academia.

First off, are those slaves still for sale Case? I've got lotsa money and meager production, so it'd be good to buy yours and build something other than squaws in a few cities. BTW I'm correct in assuming that slaves are settler units, right? I'm not that familiar with the scenario just yet. If they are settler units I will buy as many as you are willing to sell.

Yep, they're still for sale, and they act as settlers. PM with the price that you're willing to pay for them :)

Well guys the following thing had happened:

I'm an information scientist and in my spare time I love to analyze various files and afterwards construct little programs to change some offsets and observe differences in the game. Concerning Civ II I disassembled the Civ-exe file partially and the save-file completely (as it is much simpler than executable files). I constructed a program with which I could change the money even beyond the 30.000 limit, the city size and the production matrix for shields, food and trade. I tested it very often in SP mode against the AI. As I subscribed here at first I just wanted to have fun and play with people around the world but than I got the idea to use my editor and see whether the offsets I changed might be the same when I got the file back or not as I assumed that every turn the AI will calculate the production of all resources according to the real output of a city. So I changed I few stats in a ZWK game and was really astonished when I got the file back it had still the same figures in it I changed even if the city was not capable of producing let's say 60shields it did just because I changed the stats so it looks like the AI only looks in the particular offset and does not really calculate the production. I did this change a second time to be sure but unfortunately a moderator did a round of game checks and I was accused of cheating. Well in my opinion it was just a scientific research but I understand that it looks like I had cheated and there is no possibility that I could prove my motives so I took the responsibility of my actions and withdraw from the game. At the moment some players have expressed their support and still want to be in a game with me as I promised not to do it again (as now I have all the results I wanted and there is no need in using it again)but as I talked with them we agreed that it's a question of honour to ask each and everyone for his opinion on this matter. If you let me continue than I would be glad but if you think it is unforgivable what I've done than I will withdraw without a second thought. Furthermore I hope I can stay on the Boney tournament as I'm really looking forward to it and I don't have the intention to do it again. If I think to it now I realized that I should have asked you if it's ok with you but than I thought I might get a reputation of a cheater and nobody would like to have something to do with me again. Well now it seems my little secret action had backfired to me. This was a lesson for me to learn I will never ever do anything secretly and always talk to people and tell them my intentions.

As I said I know it is impossible for me to prove that I'm not a cheater in the ordinary way because I don't want to get any unfair advantage out of it but only want to do a little research on coding. So the only thing I can do is talk to you tell you what had happened and take the decisions you will make. If you believe me or not is now in your hand.

Oh and finaly just to show you I'm not a complete evil guy after all ;) may I refer you to this tread where I'm trying to tackle the city limit of Civ II:

Markus,

Speaking for myself, I am happy for you to continue in our game.

Speaking as the Bonaparte II tournament organiser, I am happy for you to stay in there, too.

Frankly, there are so many ways to cheat in PBEM (the simplest being changing rules.txt for your turn only), that it all depends on people's determination to play a clean game.

I would say your "clean breast of it" shows that.

It just shows the whole "tweaking" issue is best avoided with live games. One of my Bonaparte playtesters did something a bit similar (but much simpler), and one of the other players objected strongly. I wasn't worried - it was a playtest and we were testing the mechanics of the game, after all - but it was all declared in advance so there were no big problems...

I reckon you've learnt your lesson...;)

Oh, Jeez.

This is a real bummer. I thought we had got this set up nicely, and now this happens.

OK, I shall ask everyone else in the tournament, and see if we need a replacement.

I can imagine others there might have the same opinion as you, Case. We have to get this cleared up before we go any further, I don't want people quittinb in the middle of the game because thay find out about this. I agree it looks bad. At least we have not gone too, far yet.

(Perhaps we can revisit the Prince/King level discussion, too.)

Despite DoM's post, I am still willing to play with IM. After
all, there is nothing that he saw which markus did not admit to as far as I can see, but regardless the point at issue in my mind is that I think he is sincere. I believe that he was testing his handiwork (in a stupid way, as he himself has admitted, but testing nonetheless) and I also believe that he will not do it again. Not only do I think he is sincere, but I also know that after all he knows that the moderator checks would catch him if he did it again anyway.

Anyhow, in my opinion allowing a cheater to continue would have to be a unanimous choice, so I will respect your decision Case.

Hi, I'm back.
If you guys still want to continue this game, I wouldn't feel confortable with IM still playing, since I asked him a time ago in a PM if he had cheated (it was around 1 july) and he told me he didn't.
I believed him on his word.
But now he admits he cheated, so I think we must do the same thing with him as we did with Willem vO and Ellibb (and that guy named Scott that I don't know), which is beginning from the turn he started to play and not letting him participate anymore.
Thus beginning all over again. :( If you want that at least ...
Sorry IM

Yop

OK, that settles it, it seems. We abandon this game. I don't blame you, though.

I am happy to continue in a new Colonies 3.12, either as the Iroquois or the French. let me know what you all want to do.

We will need to start a new thred.
