Does anyone here remember the game Colonization, also designed by Sid? I think it would be great if Firaxis decided to remake this game. I would buy it without any doubt... It was very close to Civilization, but still different enough... What do you guys say about it? Do you think they'll remake it eventually?

I absolutely loved Colonization, but I doubt they'll remake it anytime soon - civ is just so much grander in scale and encompasses the entire timeline, meaning it probably has more universal appeal esp. to foreigners.

Actually it's a "Sid Meier label" game - Sid's input for game design was very limited:

Colonization was designed primarily by Brian Reynolds, but it has a fair amount of my input as far as playing it and suggesting things
The full story here

Nonetheless Colonization was brilliant IMO, especielly the way the natives played a more intensive role than you see with the more generic Civ barbarians.

With Civ4 being so modable (especially with the upcoming SDK) a sequel might not be out of the question :)

Ok. Interesting... Sorry then Brian Reynolds. Didn't mean to take your credit and hand it over to Sid. :) But I'd still say that Sid's influence on the game is pretty grande, considering that so many things in Colonization are obviously taken from the Civ series... Anyway, Colonization was/is a great game indeed. "Kiss my pinky Ring"

I still play Colonization from time to time, great classic :king:

this should probably be in the "other games" section of the forum.

Is Brian Reynolds the guy who did Rise of Nations? When did he leave Sid Meier's group of game designers?

Right before he started working on RoN :)

i love(d) it! disc is buggered now so i can't get it to work. that together with ufo: enemy unknown and terror from the deep were some of my favourite games.

ah, the memories!

after i got re-re-re-burned out on civ 3, waiting for civ 4, i went out and bought another colonization, ( about 10 bucks for a new in box game).
it's still a lot of fun.

i also love colonization, in the old days i did not play civ but colonization. indians rock :)

I kicked ass in American History back in High School thanks to my endless hours of Colonization played.

Colonization is an excellent game, especially for its time. I still go through a sort of "gotta play col" phase once in a blue moon, and when I do I praise the good Lord I've got a patched DOS version actually working under Windows XP (and it's a shame I can't say the same for Master of Magic).

The whole economic approach to the game is pretty nice too, as it's historically appropriate and you don't need anything real complex, since there's no governments, techs, and so on. I just wish the game didn't get ships on the high seas confused (resulting in mixed-up cargo), and the limit on the number of automated trade routes you can have is the other real annoyance (albeit a lesser one thanks to customs houses).

I loved this game (Colonization) and an updated (reimagined, to use a popular current term) version would be very welcome.

Oh absolutely - the influence from Civ alone carried the main theme.
Anyway, Colonization was/is a great game indeed. "Kiss my pinky Ring"
Heh, yea I remember getting a laughing fit when I refused to "kiss the pinky ring", leading to the "Boston Horse Party", dumping 20 tons of horses into the harbor :D

Have you tried DosBox? I have both Colonization and Master of Magic running under Windows XP with DosBox - complete with sound.

I did try DOSBox, and it didn't do me any good :P

The reason why I can't get Master of Magic working anyway is that there's no expanded memory. Working around this is typically handled by EMM386--except it isn't, for some reason. I'm not aware of any such functionaliy in DOSBox. I ought to get back around to tackling that issue again.

As for Colonization--it works perfectly, sound and all.

Thanks for the suggestion, though! Maybe I'll try DOSBox again later, as there may be some things I'm unaware of with it... I'm certainly not an advanced user with it, anyway.

EDIT: Well, as for getting MoM to work... I'm going to guess that whatever problems I did have disappeared when I installed a new motherboard a couple months ago--the game's working fine, although sound's a no-no.

But whatever! This is a Colonization thread, I shouldn't be derailing it in such a fashion. So... Uh, I always play as the Dutch :P
