Hi there all Colonization fans!

Just thought I might pop in and give you a heads up on Colonization II.

We're a group of swedish guys that grew up with Colonization and now have decided to create a second installment of this great game.

The progress has, so far, been tremendous and we recently decided to launch or own website promoting the game and at the same time give all the fans of Colonization a chance to offer their input and help.

So, please visit us at www.swecol2.com

The plan is to give community updates on a weekly basis and also offer development blogs from all the coders and a forum where we all can meet and discuss the game and other stuff.

Well meet in the New World!

Your design documentation looks pretty impressive, and you have clearly put a lot of thought into the project. How much progress have you made with the coding?

I like the idea of introducing Portugal as a fifth colonial power (even though they knocked England out of the World Cup yesterday!) as Brazil has become an important power in the Americas, uinlike the former French and Dutch colonies.

I think you should change the English flag to the red cross on a white background sported by our football fans, as the Union Flag came late in the era covered by Colonization. Also, Scotland made a seperate attempt to establish a colonial presence in the new world. The colony failed because the location was a malaria-infested swamp in central America, territory the Spanish considered to be theirs. England refused to risk a war with Spain by bailing out the Scottish colony and it was subsequently destroyed by Spanish forces. The expensive failure of this expedition caused a financial crisis in Scotland which was one of the reasons why Scotland accepted union with England.

Maybe the weaker colonial powrs, such as Russia and Scotland could be AI controlled and hardcoded to try setting up a colonial presence around 1700?

Hi there and thanks for your input!

I'll be sure to send the graphics coder the misstake with the flag.

Regarding to your question about the coding, well, I'm trying to brush up om my coding abilities. I used to code in VB so C++ is a bit of a step from the things I used to code. Now a days I mainly program DHTML and PHP.

What I mean is that I can't give more than a "this is what I believe" version of how the coding has progressed. But You can play the game, build colonies, trade and so on but there's still no direct AI. We're working on a few different ways how to solve this, the thing that we're focusing mostly on is peer-to-peer gaming, wich mean that the first version will probably not come with an AI, just the ability to play against other people online or via LAN.

I'm working on coding the music control but I'll probably look into the AI stuff asweel since we aren't that many people involved in this project.

I made a "teaser trailer" (I was bored one night) and in that trailer you can see the game being played by myself, well, more showing off colony screens and such. You can find it on our website.

The ambition we have is to offer, via the website, constant updates on the progress, hopefully the other guys will start writing blogs aswell and in such a way give the community news about the progress of the game.

Maybe the English Royal Standard would be a good choice, as it sidesteps the whole England/Great Britain issue; Scottish, Welsh and Irish nationalists have strong feelings on this matter. The original Colonization designers used the English Royal Standard for the English throne room scenes.

I hope that you will be able to recruit an AI expert from the Civ community as I have always thought that Colonization is an excellent game that deserves a sequel, and I have been impressed by what your group has already acheived.

Well, it will be out sooner than that. If we can keep up the pace we'll probalby have it finshed before winter.

We actually talked today about releasing an Alpha version. We hadn't planned to do that but the response has been overwhelming and people eager to play the game. We're going thru the code now doing some changes, well more cleaning up a bit, and making the game faster and easier to develop. But check in on the website, we'll try to post updates every week.

Does anyone have this file? I am looking for this file for achiving purposes...if you have it...please let me know...the site is down and I have been wanting to update my own site and provide information...

If you can help me please email or send a private message...

Thanks for your help...

Colonization was one of my favorite games back in the Amiga days!

I'd love to see a new version. But the domain is for sale... not a good sign. :(

Is it a DOS program? If so I'll be all over it. :) I have Windows, Linux, etc. but in the end I always go back to what works.

From what I've gathered it's a real colonization remake using the civ4 "engine". I wonder what the sysreq for civ4 are? 10 gazillion trilobytes and Windows Extravaganza I'm sure. For sure I won't be running it. Stinking upgrade treadmill can count me out!

But... that's a Civ game. "Civilization 4 - Colonization".
Is it Civilization or Colonization? Perhaps a modified Civ 4?

It uses the CIV 4 engine but the game itself is a remake of Colonization and is nothing like any of the Civilization games at all. Presumably the reason that Civ 4 is in the name is for marketing purposes but it is confusing a lot of people new to the game.

I am running the game on a 1.8 GHz system with 1 gig memory and a 256 MB card with no problems even on huge maps.

That makes some sense.

It confused me that's for sure! :)
