Is there a way to modify the default colors? Specifically, can I have my American civ be white (it's much easier to read)? I know, there's just no pleasing some people...

I suppose you are playing American, right?

Since you can pick one of the white Civs and manually put in your name I suppose the only other thing you want is for city names to automatically be American. If that is the case, find city.txt, make a backup, and swap the heading of Americans with the white civ you plan to choose to play, and save the file.

There is an even simpler solution: Open rules.txt and scroll down till you reach the part called LEADERS. The second of the numbers between the names of the leaders and the name of the people determine the colour, with 1 being white - so if you change the number of the Americans to 1, they will henceforth be white.
This can also be used if you want to play against a civilisation that is normally the same colour as yours. Just take care that all seven colours are still represented. There does not necessarily have to be three of each colour, but the game gets confused if it cannot choose from all seven.
