In civ 1 the combats are very quick and i like to know if a unit that fights several times is still at his maximum strengh and has the change to win much more times
The units don't get hurt like in civ2. So the next turn they've got max strength again.
This is such a pain in the ass when you've surrounded a city with city walls and a phalanx in it, you can lose 10 knights or chariots to that one phalanx... I just do this with capitals, other cities I incite a revolt in when the capital has fallen. Much quicker and more effective.
