Comics!

Aw Geez... Well, Dave Sim is a Canadian. It started out as a funny animal spoof on Conan, Cerebus the Aardvark. It changed from that to a more serious storyline after 25 issues. But still very funny. Gerhard joined in after a number of issues, I don't remember exactly when. Gerhard does the inks and backgrounds which are amazing, Dave does characters and story pretty much. A 2 man op essentially. So Cerebus is an aardvark, but the storyline is really great. Not funny Animal. He also does a lot of spoof/smacks on Marvel, DC, Image, and who knows what else, I'm not big on comics in general anymore. I dunno, I have always been into drawing and Sim and Gerhard always gave me great ref material for trying to recreate or just ideas to start from scratch. Did I mention storyline is really good also? :goodjob:

They reprint every 25 or 30 issues, so it's like a phonebook... These cost anywhere from $17 to $30 US, this is how I have bought them, 1 issue a month was too much hassle, but then I miss the great covers that way... Letters section was good too, kinda like a forum... I always wished they'd do a reprint volume of just the covers in full color...

As for Judge Dredd, well, I saw the movie! :crazyeyes I really thought it sucked... I'm thinkin the comics were better?

He's right, Floppa, Dredd is a great character, the Movie was a disgrace to ol' Dreddy.

He still has one of comic's all time great catch phrases;

I am the law, and you'd better believe it!

Basically, a few hundread years from now, the US east coast is a giant city, "Mega-city one". The west coast is megacity two, there still some Texas cities, but the land in between is the "Cursed Earth", where radiation, lawlessness, and all sorts of nasties reside.

In Europe yu have the Sov-cities (This was a cold war era book, remember). After the US President caused the last world war, it was ended when the Judges (Law men who not only catch criminals, but sentance them on the spot!) took over all government functions.

Judges were held to the highest standards, and Joe Dredd was the best of these.

Often the book had continouis story lines, among the best, the "Judge Cal(igula)" saga, "the Cursed Earth saga", and the "Apocolyspe war" were the three best.

This was a totally rad sci-fi tour de force, as the brutal judges metted out punishment to futrue criminals in direct fashion, and had many cool SF elements.

If you can find these, get em, you will never regret it. ;)

This image came from the net, it's a finnish reprint of one of the chapters of the cursed earth story, art by Brain Bolland.

I know the story, it's also part of the "Cursed earth" saga, and, in fact, Jurrasic Park is a ripoff of that comic!

That story is from the 70s, and involved cloning Dinosaurs from fossils for an amusment park! (sound familiar? ;) )

Oh, and Floppa, I forgot to mention, I know Dave Sim's Cerberus quite well. ;)

Hmm... Haven't had contact with too much Judge Dredd stuff, but may have read a few. Used to get and like the old Hammer comics/magazines.
Got a few dozen from the late 1960s and 1970s about the place.
I didn't find Conan boring, and it was good to get the additional King Kull, Red Sonja and Solomon Kane stuff in them as well. I guess I prefer fantasy over sci-fi a bit more, and liked to follow the story line.
Larry Elmore's "Snarf" that used to be in Dragon magazine was always good, as was Yamara, and its successor The Knights of the Dinner Table (or something like that). There used to be some other D&D type comics I was fond of; they even had some in the erarly 1980s Fighting Fantasy magazine whose title escapes me.

Also when young had lots of classic stories done in Swedish comics, like Rob Roy, for example, and Harald Hadrada. Yellow covers, and then graphic novel on the inside.

Now you've gone and made me all wistful for the 1980s:cry:
Remembering the old comics I had that were probably chucked out, or are in the shed, and all the other trends that didn't make it to the computer age, like gamebooks and boardgames

Okay AOA and Miko, tell me this. Are there reprint volumes? I mean, THICK books I can get with more than 5 issues worth of Dredd in it? I'm not big on the idea of going through boxes to find a decent run to read, nor back issue prices which are probably up there? There is a comic shop fairly close to where I am... Haven't been in there for a while now. (Only thing I really collect now is pre 50's hockey cards, and they had none...) I wouldn't mind droppin $30 or so on a reprint book. If it is single issues only, I'll never read them unless Miko ships his collection to me...

Yeah, i guess there are thick books...
It's a tremendous series, but i prefer going down to the local comic shop and buy as many magazines as i can, 1 Judge Dredd issue can cost maybe 50 cents...
I used to go down and buy whole boxes with Dredd:crazyeyes
I'd be holed up in my room for hours, and then i sold most of my Dredd issues to a collector downtown, to be able to afford som HATE! albums, big, big mistake...

50 cents? I'm thinkin each issue would be $2.50 to $3.95 each... Huh... Well, I am assuming there are multiple series also? So which do I look for? Judge Dredd, Amazing Judge Dredd, Spectacular Judge Dredd, Uncanny Judge Dredd, or Judge Dredd Bi-Weekly?

As for Hate!, I had the first 6 or 7 issues, maybe a reprint book would be good to pick up... I read something called Madman once, and it was dayam funny, kind of strange though... Hell, I should finish picking up the Sandman and Cerebus books I don't have. I go to a book store and I don't look at Graphic Novels...

50cents- $1.50 per issue i would think.
No, there is only Judge Dredd, but you can look for magazines that has a copule of pages Dredd in them, these mags should also go for about 50 cents, or you can look for old 2000ad weekly magazines, there was Judge Dredd in practically all 1.350 issues that were printed from 1978 to now, these may be a wee bit more expensive, but there might be some Nemesis the Warlock in them, so there is no harm looking for em'.

Your link no worky for me yo. :p But I'll look for some... I can probably find a bookstore in the states that has some of the reprint volumes...

THAT link workyed just fine. I check it out now. Thanks

Okay Miko, there was Classic Dredd, there was Dredd, there was 2000AD... I have no idea what the heck I'm doin on that site man. Is it the same writer for the entire series?
