I recently bought PTW to play over my LAN at home with my brother. The specs on my computers are:

PIII 500 Mhz
ATI Radeon 7800 32 MB
128 MB Ram
Some Soundblaster Card
Windows 98

AND

P4 2.2 GHZ
GeForce 3 64 MB
256 MB Ram
TB Santa Cruz
Windows ME

I normally would think that the game should be hosted on the better computer however every game crashed right away. I was a little perplexed so I read the readme and found a nice line of text saying something like this:

"There may be compatability issues with TB Santa Cruz Sound Cards" D'OH

So I disabled the Sound Card (At least I think I disabled it) and tried to play over the LAN again, same random crashing. I was getting pretty angry at this point when my brother pointed out, why not host on the other computer.

So we tried again on the slower more unreliable computer and were able to play without crashes for well over 3 hours. So I'm wondering weather the crashing is caused by the sound card or more possibly my OS.

Any Ideas?

I do know that Civ3 goes a little crazy if you mess with the sound card settings... (including disabling it).

I have ME, it seems to be fine. I've had the usual MP crashes (don't worry, these are common on ALL systems), but I've had one or two apparently ME-related crashes. Don't worry, although I suggest you mainly play on your comp, not your brothers.

Thats not a ME problem, thats a PTW problem. Do you have 1.04?

Wouldn't be so sure of that. As a beta-tester I USED to have window ME, but the agony of that caused me to upgrade to Window XP Home.

From being beset by crashes with multiplayer changing from ME to XP solved most of them. I did comment to Firaxis that PTW isn't really compatible with ME in IMHO.

Well, thats just your opinion. My ME is pretty fine, although I'm going to start hinting to my mom for a new computer...:p

I've couldn't even get the DirectX 8.1 to install on my ME computer. I ended-up installing Windows 2000 just so I could play my wife on our two PC's. One is running 98SE and the other 2000. Both are running great. But you couldn't pay me to reinstall ME.
