Complete research doesn't work in late game

In my late game, using a great person to complete research on a technology does not work - it does work before the modern era, it seemed. Has anyone else experienced this? I searched to see but maybe my searches were too vague or too specific.
 
Using the GL to research technologies adds so many beakers toward research of that tech. In the beginning/mid-game, this is enough to research the tech immediately. With the more expensive technologies, the GL doesn't generate quite enough to discover the tech immediately, however, using them to boost research DOES add a significant amount of beakers toward the tech...

How about this:

In modern age I use a scientist for tech -- but it gives the 2700some beakers to a tech I'm not researching. When I finish my current tech, it appears as if my people have "forgotten" the research for the tech that the scientist's points went to.

Is there a way to choose where those scientist beakers are going? It's nice that they'll give me more than 2,000 beakers, but I'd prefer they go to a tech I want now, rather than a tech I plan on researching ten turns (or more) later.
 
The tech that a great person can be used for is dependent on what type of great person it is so you cant always use it towards the one you are currently researching.
 
You can never choose which tech your GP researches. IIRC, it's assigned to the individual GP at the time of their creation and doesn't change, unless you research the tech that it's been assigned.
