I FINALLY managed to get the darn thing built with all its components... but... when I went to launch the USS Stenchilada... the screen goes green and beeps. I reloaded the game and tried again, but the second time, the screen just went black.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem?

I've got workers on Pollution duty.... could the number of workers on automated clean-up be causing the game to lock up?

I reloaded a third time and went for a Diplomatic Victory and the score was pretty good, all things considered... I just wanted to have the space victory .

Any thoughts?

The ONE time I ever built the damn thing there was no lockup.

I stopped using the Space Race when while I was building one and suddenly the game ended - the Chinese launched, and I didn't even know there were building it as I had no spy. Which is stupid as it should not take a spy to learn that. I also tried to plant a spy three times in China with no success; if I tried again it would have likely meant war.

I find the Space Race victory the 2nd easist to achieve (no lockups on my system - W2K). Easist to hardest way of winning.

1. Diplomatic is so easy to win (just sign MPP with almost everyone and start a war with the biggest Civ).
2. Space ship is easy if you invest time in building up your empire (factories, manufacturing plants, solar plants etc). You can build the components with only a handfull of core cities. The only challenge is to get the last tech needed first, or to steal it no matter what the cost. Set your biggest production city to build it, or even start constructing something before the tech is available, then switch. Most of my victories are Space race.
3. Domination for those with patience.
4. Cultral victory.
5. Conquest - can be easy, but those pesky AI settlers keep filling up the vacated land. I usually keep enemy cities and trigger domination win before conquest.

First time I was going for a space race victory, I was surprised to find that as soon as you launch your space ship, the game ends. In civs 1 and 2, the spaceship took approx 15-20 years from launch til landing, so I rushed all the bits so that I could launch about 2025 so it enough flight time and suddenly game over.
