I just dropped by the magazine rack on the way to work and took a peak at the new issue of Computer Games. Not much news in the magazine, though I may have missed something in my quick scan, the text (about a 3/4 page) was basically a review of the talking points we've already heard from Firaxis, and the screenies were pretty similar to what we've already seen (though once again, I may have missed an important detail, I was running at the time and don't have the mag with me), but there was one thing I noticed that grabbed my attention ...

Notice: SPECULATION

In the screenies we've already seen there's something similar. Remember the buttons from civ3 which you can hit to have your units take certain actions? Well, they seem to have carried the concept on to civ4. There were three buttons at the bottom of the screenie I saw: a shield with crossed swords (fortify), a skull (disband), and an arrow, turning 180 degrees around a center point.
From the moment I saw it, I said "flanking", but the arrow turns right, shouldn't there be a button to turn left? But, of course, the arrow turns 180 degrees, so it must be an about-face. If this is correct (note: true speculation), then that probably means that in civ4:
1) you must expend a turn to turn around
2) you can only see the three squares in front of you, and the one each to right and left (five total), but not the three behind
3) you can turn into the squares you see, but not those you can't
4) the reason there are four characters in each unit represented is to show what direction they are facing -- when they are fortified they point in all directions
5) there will be units that are able to see more than the regular units

Holes in my argument: what happens when units are stacked, and come from opposite directions? how will the AI handle this?

If this is the case, I like it, but I'm aware that this is mostly guess work. I wish I'd examined the mag more closely, but this is what stood out to me. If anyone else saw it, is there anything I missed?

Either that or it was the "cycle city" button ;) Or most probably a certain worker action.

I think your post needs to go in the "1000 clues you are anticipating civ4 too much" thread!

Though it would be cool if there was a facing component to the game......

was there plastic on this issue or do we have to buy it to see?

Take a look at the article (yes you can do so without buying the issue). You'll see that what I'm saying isn't as much a shot in the dark as you might think: there really isn't anything else that button could be. I just didn't want people to be thinking "Firaxis announces flanking component in civ4", because they didn't.

Probably the "wait" command.

Having to "turn" is extremely unfun. I doubt they'd be foolish enough to do something like that.

Haha! "Hey, you. Jump over this rock and wait OVER HERE please."

Actually... Skull and Crossbows for disband (kill off) unit? Crossed swords for fortify? Maybe the arrow and dot is from side view instead of top view. Somebody's idea of an icon for "skipping over" something?

Of course, it could be a command to "run around in circles, doing nothing." Or maybe it's a "circle the wagons" command. Or maybe is the Civ4 incarnation of the Diablo II chat gem.

Ummmm, you know that button sounds AWFULLY familiar to me. It sounds like the button in civ3 which allows you to do 'sentry' duty-where the unit roams around your territory looking for enemies-or some such (I never use it myself ;)!)

lyer.. i went to 7 11 yesterday and never seen plastic so thick on an issue!

Possibly there is an idea to be implemented after the groundwork is laid down, and that arrow, (I haven't seen it) could be a geometric symbol to add more icons later, to perform specialized commands.

Did it look anything like this? (From PTW):

Yup, I just confirmed it too (though I can't figure out how to do a screen capture :(!) the symbol he described matches the Explore key to a tee, so there doesn't seem to be anything new in this at all!!

Why not purchase the magazine? If I see it, I'll pick it up ;)
I'm mostly curious as to what the game will look like. I already have an idea of the gameplay considering I've been into Civ1, Civ2, Civ3, SMAC, CivCTP. Of course I hope it's even better than Civ3.

Thanks for the heads up thesmith!

it depends... most convenience stores do have the plastic intact, but magazine stands or book stores may or may not have the plastic.

Well, Ybbor, thats just Disband, Explore and Fortify-so nothing new there I'm afraid :(! Though I do like the graphics for them ;)!

Kinda looks like bombard, or leapfrog.

Maybe this facing attribute is a good idea. Not that it takes one turn up, but maybe instead of an artificial flanking bonus, you can get an actual combat bonus if you surpirise attack from behind.
