Having real problems with one of the other computers in the house, and would like some questions answered.

Can you format a hard-drive right back to bare, and if so, what's the command?

Where can I find a list of working Dos commands?

What could cause three modems to stop working in the last week?

Search on the web.

Depends what you mean by 'stop working'. Could be a hardware or software problem. Is everything else working OK? Have you tried plugging it into a different motherboard slot?

Could be either software or hardware. Everything else seems to be working okay. Haven't yet tried to plug it into another slot, but have tried removing an d replacing, which seems to work for a few hours.

You might try fdisk if you want to get rid of the partitions on the hard drive, too.

And for a list of DOS commands, you might try typing HELP at the dos prompt.

Dunno about the modems. If they're working until the computer heats up, maybe a loose connection somewhere? As Ainwood says, try another slot, or to really rule things out, another PC.

If you're going to be reinstalling windows or another OS, you may as well just use the utility that they have to delete and create partitions, which will format the drive in the process.

Neither that, the format command or fdisk will truly get the drive completely bare though. Generally the best you can do is download a utility that your HDD maker should have and do a low-level format. If you're going to be tossing the drive and are worried about sensitive info, it's best to just physically destroy it, IMO.

Need a lot more info. 3 modems in one PC, or 3 modems in seperate PCs? All the same model, or different? If you remove them from the problem PC, do they work in a different comp?
