Alright so to begin this post, the reason "concept" is in the tag is because 1. I figure there is probably already a staff working on such a mod, and 2. I don't want to jump the gun, do the research and heavy work, and get people all excited for a mod that I am not 100% behind just yet. I've been doing heavy research and work on the idea, been laying out some groundwork and mechanics notes, but I have yet to touch the files themselves in relation to this.

Could I end up starting a team for this mod? Possibly.
Should you get your hopes up? I would prefer you didn't.

This post is moreso an discussion post, what would YOU like to see out of a Three Kingdoms era mod, I'll be posting my original findings and changes and mechanics that would be overhauled for anyone to discuss, and anyone is welcome to add their own bits to this discussion, this is very round table, and very open, because I enjoy this kinda discussion.

Alright shall we begin then?

Concept

This mod would be an entire overhaul of Civilization V to fit into the Three Kingdoms Era of Chinese History. The Three Kingdoms Era was a time of turmoil when the Han Dynasty fell and three "Kingdoms" (Actually Empires technically) rose up in its place and began feuding over the entirety of the nation.

This era entered the popular culture when software publishers Koei used the book "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" as the basis for two separate series of games. The Romance however is very romanticized (No pun intended), one quote I've read stated it consists of "70% fact, 20% exaggeration, and 10% fiction" and I've seen those ratios adjusted here and there. I will be in fact pursuing the Romanticized version of this text if I do pursue this, albeit I will be doing a much farther stepped down one (I don't know if I'll include Sorcery for example, I will be basing some information roughly on fictional accounts of the era, etc.) I will also be going with the extended version of the timeline (beginning at the Yellow Turban Rebellion).

This era divided China into Three Factions:
Shu Han - Led by Liu Bei, Shu Han (Also referred to as just "Shu") sought to restore the former Han to its previous glory and end the turmoil that was pervading China. In the later years Shu would be passed down to Liu Bei's son, Liu Shan, after his father's death.
Cao Wei - The basis for Cao Wei (Als referred to as just "Wei) was laid down by a man known as Cao Cao, the former Imperial Chancellor. He owned and conquered/swayed most of the northern territories behind his cause and declared him "King of Wei", albeit his reign was short lived and his son, Cao Pi, attempted to finish what his father had started.
Eastern Wu - During the turmoil that was the fall of the Han Dynasty, Sun Quan was a warlord who had inherited a large amount of land in the south from his brother, Sun Ce. He had no intention of starting his own Kingdom, but seeing the succession of both Shu Han and Cao Wei, he declared his own dynasty, the Wu Dynasty. It would be the longest lasting of the Three Kingdoms.

Overview
--------
-Implementation of an entirely new unit tree that will pervade the game. Units will begin as Recruits, and will use Promotions to change themselves into bigger and better units.
-Cities begin pre-placed, so no settling new cities. You will have to develop your own cities/provinces and conquer or subdue your neighbors into following you to expand your Empire.
-Great People are combat units, Great Generals (Officers) will lead your men into battle and help assist you in conquering your foes. Great Scientists will be replaced with Strategists, who will provide bonuses to nearby allies and have a variety of tools available to them.
-The Social Policy system will be replaced with a "Succession" system, as you progress throughout the game you will accumulate "Deeds" or "Influence" which will allow you to rise up the ladder and eventually declare yourself Divine Emperor (Cultural Victory)
-Unhappiness and Unrest will cause rebellions amongst your people, keep them happy, or you may find your rebellion is ended by another rebellion.
-Some provinces will be led by a City-State like Governor that is not part of any other kingdom, they will have to be swayed or conquered.
-To be honest, I'm completely unsure what to do with technology.

Units
--------
*This unit tree is a major work in progress.
*Mounted is a unit promotion you can choose upon a unit leveling up (or by having a Stable), this promotion increases a units move range but also makes them more susceptible to attacks from spear using units.
*Siege units will be available as well, ranging from Catapults to Rams.
*There will be other unit trees available as well, this is the Imperial line, for example there will be a Pirate tree of units you may get access to by befriending a certain city state, or a Nanman tree.

need some unique general fighting units to get the 3kingdom feel i think: guan yu, zhang fei, ma chao, zhao yun, huang zhong... so many more but shu is all i can think of at the moment

i really need to read that book, I loved dynasty warriors, haven't played it in ages though. HOTK would be awesome for civ5 though, looking forward to it.

That's what Officers will be, your Great Generals will be randomly named appropriately and be full fledged combat units that provide bonuses to bordering units.

And yes, the Romance is a very ridiculous book if your reading comprehension isn't too great, but after multiple reads (I read two different translations of it) I can solidly say I loved it, the stories are just amazing.

And yes blame Dynasty Warriors/ROTK for starting me on that craze as a kid xD

Bump, anyone have anything else to contribute?

I'm contemplating starting work on this today with some placeholder art from the base game for now, will keep in touch with how progress goes.
