Hi, I just got Civ II: MGE and the two expansion packs Fantastic Worlds and Test of Time from amazon :). Now I haven't gotten them yet (bought them today) and am having a few concerns before they arrive:

1) Do I need the original Civ II to play the expansion packs? Or is MGE also a "starting" game and not a expansion pack I can add the other games too?

2)Can I play it on Windows XP or do I have to bust out my really old laptop to run them:P?

Thanks for any and all help for I am brand new to Civ II and hope it turns out to be a really good game like so many people here say it is:).

1. Actually you might have overbought. MGE's core program incorporates all the benefits of FW. FW is an expansion for the original Civ 2. The only benefit you'll get is by playing the scenarios on the FW CD. Do not install FW over MGE.

ToT is actually a stand alone "sequel" to Civ 2 MGE. It's better in many respects. See Wobbegong's site for the side by side comparison.

2. XP should run it, but you may need the file called "choice." to run it. Do a search for it here and your bound to find it posted.

Thanks alot for your response:). However I am not quite following you on one part: So is ToT a expansion or does it have everything included and I shouldn't have bought the other stuff:P?

Also, so to be 100% sure I do not ever install fantasy worlds for it is completely included in MGE and would be a problem.

Also, two more things: Is there any patchs I need/should get and could you be more specific as to where it the choice is :)?

I don't know anything about MGE, but ToT is entirely stand-alone. It's my favorite of the Civ games I've tried (my username here is the one I normally use when playing the Uridians in the Science Fiction game and the Stygians in the Fantasy game). :)

Check the Tech Support forum for instructions on installing to XP or 2000 - basically you need to update the Indeo video drivers to version 5 before installing, then deal with (possible) missing DLLs it complains about afterward.

Welcome to CivII, Condor! Looking at your post numbers, are you already into another version?

Thanks for help people :). Yes, I also have Civ III and the expansion packs and Civ 4 though I don't play it to much (more of a civ 3er and hopefully soon a civ 2er :)).

You probably won't even be able to install if you wanted to. FW is an expansion to the original Civ2, you'd need that to be able to install it. MGE is more recent and includes all of FW.

Make sure you get the latest MGE (v1.3) and ToT (v1.1) patches. You should be able to find both here on CivFanatics.

Nevermind the "choice" thing. Just keep it in the back of your mind if you ever start playing scenarios with batch files. (Some scenarios use a batch file to change game files in mid-game. Most of those batch files rely on a DOS file called "choice.com" for displaying an option menu. XP doesn't have that file. Just ask again whenever you run into problems with scenarios.)
