connecting to trade network

i know how to connect my own cities but how do i connect to other civs trade networks? i have 2 cities on the coast and have researched sailing yet it still says not connected. in fact my current game my 2 cities arent even connected with each other but this could be due to a barbarian city which is placed on the coast between them

surely someone knows the answer to this question! basically i wanna know why both moy cities which are on the coast and i have sailing arent connected to other civs trade network which means i cant trade resources?

I think it's because of the barbarian city in between. Civs, that are at war with you block trade routes, and barbarians are at war with everybody all the time.

And remember that you need Astronomy to trade with civs on other continents. Sailing only works in coast tiles, Astronomy in ocean.

Before astronomy, your sea-trade network cannot go through barbarian city culture borders (nor enemy borders). That's probably your problem. A barbarian ship might also block it, I'm not sure.
