Conquering Islands

Could someone please explain how I can conquer a single-tile island?

Bomb/bombard it down to 'zero' hitpoints (when any further bombardments don't take off HP) and then run a scout or any other melee unit in for the capture.

This^^ Except I didn't think scouts could attack? I would suggest using a battleship or another naval unit with increased range so you can bombard with out your unit taking any hits.

Scouts can attack...

Multiple Destroyers will do the trick if you've not got Battleships... note that the AI will always target the unit with the least hp, so you will need to withdraw a badly damaged unit and repair, but the majority will be safe. It doesn't take long with 4 or more destroyers. Any land troop can take a city which is down to only 1 hp.

This is important information people! I can't stress this enough, when a city is down to its last hitpoint (further bombardment doesn't lower its hitpoints any more) then ANY unit can take the city without dying. A scout would just take a lot of damage, but it will never lose (and thus die) against a city on its last hit point and it will ALLWAYS take the city.

Even a scout with just one hitpoint would do the trick.

It's also worth remembering that units with the amphibious promotion can attack the island without penalty, so long as you have naval units to protect them from enemy ships.

Yeah, if you have an amphibious promotion, it'll be easier. This isn't necessary, however, it'll just allow you to attack a weakened but not dead city. If you have several with amphibious promotions, you can even attack before it'll conquer the city just to further weaken it.

Yes - build a barracks and armory, and you will be able to get the amphibious promotion.
