Happy Yule!
Well, it's been many many many years since I played Civ 2, but I got it loaded up on my most recent computer. After having to search the forums to clear up that damn Indeo error, I played a game.
I was a chieftain (Hamalcar of the Carthaginians), 7 civs, the world was random, barbarians were random (and had to have been almost non-existent, since I rarely saw any), and, most importantly, new civs do not take the place of conquered civs.
Not much to say, except, well, I slaughtered them all. Normally I play for a scientific victory, but after two civs were taken out by the Mongols and I realized that the entire world was one giant continent (much to my chagrin, actually, as I had gotten navigation pretty quickly), I decided to play to conquer.
I captured Samarkand quickly, since it was on the water (brought up a boat with Elephants). Took out the Mongols (three other cities). Attacked Thebes and started working on the Egyptians (they had like eight cities). While looking for their cities, took out the two cities that the Persians had. All that was left was the Russians with three cities. I had every city generating elephants (I was also a monarchy at this point). And I just kept sending the elephants towards the Russian cities. Once St. Petersburg fell, it got a little easier since I could Go To St. Petersburg instead of marching. Soon Moscow and Kiev were but memories, and I still had like 40 elephants working their way across the continent.
It wasn't pretty, but it was effective. 260 BC victory, 52% rating. Never even had to build a Temple. Probably my best game ever in Civ 2. Next time I'll try a more difficult game.
