"Conquest, Open, or Predator?" Division Discussion

Founder, since you say that you easily win 3 out of 5 games on Diety, I would definately not recommned that you play Conquest. Being new here has nothing to do with the process of honestly assessing your skill level and choosing the game that is appropriate for you experience and abilities.
Hm... You think? Simply I want 100% win in class where I'll start. In Conquest it would be easy... But in Open Class... OK. I'll try!

TheFounder: also realize that playing in the Conquest class means your score will be penalized in the end for playing on the easier level. Therefore, it is in your best interest to play open class if you are looking at getting a medal in the GOTM.

Cracker does not divide out the 3 classes and award winners to each division. Therefore, there are no medals for being #1 in the conquest division....unless you somehow manage to overcome the scoring penalization and blow away all the open class players.

Wow! I didn't know it. Where can I read about difference in score system between classes?

At http://gotm.civfanatics.net/games/gotm21_features.shtml there is only "will be weighted downward" or "no penalty". Where I can get numbers, like "In Conquest class score is 0.75% of real".

Founder, it is fairly clear that you will not be playing the Conquest Class game on a monarch difficulty base setup if you are truly an 3 out of 5 Deity win player. That would be like smashing grapes with a brick.

The scoring differentials are still being worked out for the Conquest class but it suffices to say that this does not apply to you or your games.

I'm another example of a player who hasn't been keeping up with the increasing difficulty levels: 2 spaceship losses, and 2 times the AIs ganged up on me.

On the plus side, this has forced me to learn the game and not just randomly try things to see what works. As a result, I'm now winning Monarch more often than not, instead of struggling on Regent.

I'll try Open this time around, and this time I'll have the discipline to wait for last month's QSC results before starting. Of course being away from home until 7/8 will help with that too... So this month there will be at least one data point on the success of pushing people beyond their normal limits as a learning process. ;)

DaveShack, keep hanging in there- my first GOTM was the evil Babylon Deity map, starting me out next to Xerxes, and although I lost the game, playing it helped me immensely. Congratulations on your newfound success on Monarch, and I hope this upward trend continues for you. :goodjob:

I think the AI starting bonus could be an advantage for the best players. While it does make it harder to play, there is also an advantage that I think the top players will be able to take advantage of and that is better AI's can mean a faster tech pace (especially at the beginning).

It will be interesting to see if any player can take advantage of this and actually have a better game (in terms of spaceship launch time) than if they played in the open class.

I haven't decided between Predator or Open myself. The challenge of Predator is tempting even though I am not a top player.

Well, I'm going to chicken out and play Conquest (I think). I've been debating a lot, but what finally convinced me was the number of opponents and the relatively high barbarian level. I doubt the bonuses will make up for the lower score, but at least with the additional resources I'll be more likely to actually win this month.
