IMPORTANT REQUEST:

Civ3 has 32 palette colours: one (1) for the barbarians and the rest (31) up for grabs.

We have a total of 24 civilisations with civ3 and PTW together (plus the one the Barbarians use, of course). This means that 25 palette colours are taken already.

32 - 25 = 7 (Aka, we have a palette of seven (7) available colours for any new civ we want to add... BUT Conquests will add 7 ???

We thus lack colours for any custom civilization we have already added- or want to add in the future !!!!!!!

Comment: I am somebody who likes to play on an oversized map (356x356) with all the civs I can grab (I already added 7 custom civs). The whole idea about being able to add new civs is at stake if the palette options is not enhanced swiftly !!!!!!!!!!!!

I have no idea of how to do this, except in one case: Barbarians could be given a new default palette colour: Plain Black. For other colours there would have to be new sub-colours...

There are 10 civs in Europe at present (PTW), there are less in the whole of Asia than in Europe- if I am not mistaken there is only 7 of them in Asia, which is about 5-6 times the size of Europe.

In Northern America and the whole of Africa, while both being considerably larger than the European land mass there are only 3 civs each, in Southern America only 1. In Australia on the Oceanic Region there isn't a single civilization.

Comment: - many more non-European Civs needed !!! Europeans cannot expand properly, other powers should face the same space problems

Why would a larger pallete help?

Have to say i think there are enough civs and enough colours for each. I think this is one of the least important areas for Atari/Firaxis to focus their attentions on.

I also use colorblind help as it is if I get the close yellowish colors or pinkish-purple colors on two teams as it is.

This was about the first point of the thread we will have run out of colours once Conquests hits the shelves :o

Ian, I wasn't suggesting Firaxis should make new civs en mass, my suggestion was that they should stop cramping so many into Europe- there is a whole "undercivilized" planet to populate.

With a larger palette modders would find it easier to place custom civs on the (pre-made) map without having to repeat colours, something which will have to do if I should get Conquests as I alread filled out the available palette colours with Sween excellent civilisations. Conquest brings seven new civs and PTW left a mere seven colours- how is that not important to people that would like more customization ?

I mean it is not thaaaat important but maybe it would suffice if they'd just tell us where and how to enlarge the palette... :egypt:

But how's the situation any different before and after Conquests?

Currently the max number of civs in a game is 31 + 1 for barbarians. After Conquests the max number of civs will still be 31 + 1.

Or at least I think that if they had changed the max cap to 64 then they would have "leaked" it to the previews because it's just too juicy as a teaser. Besides the fact that Conquests will add exactly 7 new civs argues very much for the max cap still being 31 civs.

After 32 colors, is there too much variety anyway? I wouldn't have much of a harder time telling the difference between a red civ and another red civ than between a red civ and a "crimson" civ. Heck, in my last game there were two yellowish (but slightly different) colored civs, one I was at war with, the other at peace with, and after conquering most of one civ (the one on my continent), I realized the other civ was in fact another civ just before sending an expedition there.

I suppose it might be nice to allow users to create their custom colors, though.

you attack the wrong civ? ...
No, but I was planning to. I realized that it wasn't the same civ a few turns before I would have sent soldiers over there.

Hihihi, Slaughtering your idle neighbours, are you ?! See, if instead of yellow and lemonish yellow you could have changed one of those to "Sparkling Silver" or "Gold" the enemy wouldn't be able to hide behind your friends :D

If 2 civs have, for example, red as both their first and second choice, and are both in the game, the AI will allocate one civ red and the other one the first colour available in the pallette order. Therefore, if you had all civs modded to red as first and second choice, and you played, for example, an eight-civ game, the colours for the civs will be the first eight in the pallette order, which are all distinctly different for each other.
This is one way of making it so that you don't have very "similar" colours.

That said, I would like to have a wider choice of pallette, but that is only due to personal preference. I also understand that the number of choices of colour is in some way linked to the number of civs you have available at the game set-up stage, another well-trod discussion on these forums!
