Conquests to Gold Edition MP Problems

First, I DID try searching the forums and didn't find anything relating to this. I have Gold edition and my friend has Conquests, and we can't seem to get an MP game going. We keep getting a version incompatibility error, or it doesn't work at all. We find each other with no problem, but it barks about the versions. We both tried updating, my Play The World is up to 1.27f, I updated Civ3 up to 1.29f (which didn't seem to make a diff because it still says 1.27f as the version), as did he. Anyone else have this problem?
