Hi all. Upgraded to Windows 8 a few days ago and my copy of Civ III, which ran fine on Vista, is working but super slowly on Windows 8. Tried fiddling around with Keepres=1, Nvidia aspect ratios and a whole bunch of other stuff, but no joy. Anyone have any ideas? Other games seem to work fine.

I am running on Win8 and notice that CivAssist II is very slow and appears to peg one of the cores because my CPU meter goes to a flat 25% (quad core processor), but I haven't noticed a problem with the game itself. I have a Core 2 Quad Q8200 and 4 GB of DDR2 RAM and integrated Intel G41 (GMA X4500) graphics. I recently installed Win8 RTM with nothing much added so far. I usually play standard-sized 7-opponent maps and often abandon the game in the mid-late middle ages.

I installed the game in an alternate location (C:\users\public\games\civ3), but I don't know if that would affect speed.

I don't use CivAssist, Dual-core with 4GB of RAM, but it worked just fine under Vista so must be something that's happened with the change of OS. A quick Task Manager scan shows it's running at about 15% of the CPU (which would be an issue!) No idea why though.

The slowness is all-present, it's not just slow turn-times on Huge maps or anything. I'm getting hugely laggy battle/worker action animations for example on Tiny maps.

Ohhhhh... you got it, Puppeteer. I had to install it in compatibility mode to get round a "loading error 5l" and it stayed that way - but taken it off and it works a charm. Compatability Mode the Forgotten stays at bottom of my general history of Microsoft's ideas...
