Constant Downloading of the whole game?

Hi all,

To downlad the patch, Steam made me download 4.5 gigs of data (the same size as the demo!) and after this, then downloaded the patch, around 35 mgbs.

Now, I log into the office network and discover its downloading another 4.5 gigs! Why and what for? Could my windows update have affected the game files?

I installed CivV off a DVD.

Please help!

I had a similar experience...a couple of times. (I've written to Valve/Steam twice in the past week--haven't received a response.)

My case is that I logged onto Steam over the weekend to pick up the new patch (1.0.62) and the "Downloads" window indicated that it had "1 download" ready...all 4.6GB of it. I thought it was a mistake and started the download anyway (I'm on dial-up so I knew I couldn't/wouldn't want to tie up my machine for 5 days); I figured Steam was just transmitting a download file size numerical mistake. In hope that the only missing download (at that time) -- the 30MB patch -- would actually being downloaded, I pressed the "Resume" button and was amazed that the whole 4.6GB file was being downloaded. After 60MB of download, I aborted the download process (my "pause" button doesn't work most of the time...I wonder if that's a result of the dial-up lag...a really long lag?).

I tried the next day (Sunday) and the same 4.6GB file was waiting to be downloaded again.

Personally, I can't stand the Steam interface with my current configuration. It really is a shame that I can't play Civ5 anymore since the most recent download(s) hosed my previous version (v1.0.20) that I played several games on. No download content transparency or means to kill/re-load a download file queue. Very backwards way of running a game distribution system, IMO.

If you get a satisfactory answer/solution, please post it. Contacting Valve/Steam has been fruitless to date.

Its possible some file(s) in Civ5 got corrupted and for some reason it wants to download the whole game. Try right clicking on Civ5 in the list of games and verifying the game cache. Or delete all local content for the game and reinstall.

You can disable automatic patching by right-clicking on the Civilization V in your list of Steam games and selecting Properties. There's an option in there to change it to not automatically update if you want.

And yeah, VALVe's tech support is really slow.

I have seriously never seen before, that so many files got corrupted out of nothing.
Seems to happen all the time.

Seems to happen all the time? I've seen like two or so posts on this. I've never had this problem myself either (at least, not with Steam games).

Yea other than the one file i had to fix for Civ V with the varifier i almost never have corruption issues, it's VERY odd if your having it all the time. Sounds like bad internet.
