I'm not much of a computer bod, and I'm confused by this term 'cookies' that keeps coming up. I know they are like bits of information that allow the site to 'remember' you in some way, but there are other aspects I'm unsure about. Could someone tell me:

  • Can a cookie carry, or take the form of, a virus or spy/adware?
  • Can a cookie damage your computer or computing experience in any way?
  • Is it advisable to 'clear' cookies whenever possible?
  • Do cookies take up space on the hard disk?
  • Are there any other possible downsides to having a cookie on your computer?
Thanks in advance. :)

Well, I dont think a cookie could be a virus, but then again any thing to do with the internet could be a virus or spy/adware.

Cookies havent hurt me or my computer yet.

I usally get rid of the cookies when ever i can.

Yes cookies do take up space on the hard drive.

None that i know of.

Well, if they haven't hurt you then they probably aren't too dangerous, if at all. Thanks jubnub, you get a:

You could delet a cookie with a program, try CCleaner. Cookies are there so if for example you dont log out of CFC, next time you come back your acount would be open.
