Cooperative Roleplay-based IAAR

I'd be interested.

Ah good! I thought this was a failure. If we dont get much more interest we could even modify it a bit to just be focused around a newspaper that is reporting about the world, each of us creating stories and pieces for each addition.

I'll do it. I don't even play the game mostly to win, anyway. I think this could be really interesting.

@Heerlo: Me neither. Ive always been more into the nation building aspect.

@xnira: Well this is enough. I was just going to give it another day then start.

Before I ever got a Civ game, I just thought it would be so fun to be able to run your own country. And that's most of the reason I still play it.

Agreed. I rarely "try" to win, I just play for fun. Anyways, this looks like fun. I've done similar things on other forums, let's give it a shot.

Good! I am happy to have all the interest. I suppose we should begin discussion on a few things before we start:

  1. What civilization should we play?
  2. What time period do you want to begin in?
  3. Would you rather go with the original idea or would you rather everyone participate in the writing of the newspaper?

1. Probably a flexable civ like America, Arabia, or England, so if we do win, we can do it via many options.
2. Ancient. I want this game to have depth.
3. I don't really care, I'll just go with anything:D.

I personally would like to have a character in the game, but just do it however ya like.

I was thinking I might take a role in the military and maybe control a great general whenever we get one, if that would be okay.

That would be perfect. Until then you could just head up a warrior and scout division. I suppose we can make a "dibs" list for units like great people.

I think if we did a newspaper we would definitely have to start in the era with the printing press tech in it. As far as civilization choice, I'd recommend England, France or America for no reason in particular. XD

Ah good, that makes 3 Englands (including myself)! Well if we decide to start in an era before newspapers we could just use something equal to that (in the ancient era it could be a storyteller, in the medieval age it could be a town crier, ect).

England is fine with me as well. I've actually been playing as England in my current game.

I'll join too! Is this going to be structered more or less the same as that other one? Government and Politics, I think it was called.

No its much different than GaP. That was a game where this is much more story oriented. That is actually why i decided to tag this as a story not an iaar.

Now that we have some interest, it is time to begin really getting down the mechanics of the game. This is what I have worked out:

Spoiler :
The game will be run over two threads: an in-character (IC), and out-of-character (OOC). No OOC in the IC thread and vice versa. The ooc thread would mainly be used for actual discussion by the players about choice made in game and about the story. I will reveal information about the game world in the OOC thread, but the only real "updates" (we'll call them chapters in the IC) in the OOC thread will be save files, as I plan to divulge all of the information needed about the game world in the IC thread, but I still want you guys to be able to make screen-shots or get a better idea of what is happening by accessing the save itself. The OOC will be just a normal thread, but the IC will have rules. Posts must be in paragraph form with at least two paragraphs of proof-read roleplay in them. There will be no godmoding or the like (for those of you unfamiliar with roleplay, godmoding is the controlling of another persons character(s) without their consent). All posts will be subject to approval by me, and if found to be in anyway against the rules I will ask that you please either revise or remove your post. Though I have set all these rules they are mostly a formality, but are to uphold the quality of the story to make it better for everyone.

Who plays what role and what each role has power over in the game could potentially cause issues, but I hope in the interest of fun we can all be reasonable about this. Everyone can play multiple roles if they wish (and I heartily encourage it). I want to keep everything fair though, so if one person is playing the king, the great general, and the missionary and another wishes to play the great general, the first must give it up because they already are controlling two other high-profile characters. Though multiples of the same kind of role are ok (multiple peasants, multiple merchants). If there is enough demand for a single high-profile role (for example the monarch), we would simply take turns controlling the ruling family upon the death of the king. For roles involving great people and the like we can always have a waiting list that would be first-come-first-served. As for what power the role actually has in the game, it will just be common sense. The king will obviously at the beginning have the most direct power over what happens in the actual game, though for instance a mutiny on the part of soldiers would give direct control to the leader of that group. Though a great profit or missionary would choose the next religion, or scientist the next technology. It really just depends on the role, and any conceivable role is open. However, I reserve the right to veto any actions in the interest of the story. For example, if strategically in the game it would be best to sacrifice a unit that another is controlling but they don't want to kill of their character the action will be vetoed. Or obvious "beelining" of technology will also be stopped because such an action is unrealistic in the context of a story. Some decisions could possibly be announced in the roleplay but others can simply be put in the OOC thread, or left for me to make. Though we are centering the story on the game, it is not going to be the main focus.

This more or less will be present on the first post of the OOC and will more or less be the basic rules. What we have left to do is decide when we will be starting and the pace of the game. Though an earlier start may seem better, too early could prove to be boring. I think that I should play some turns before we start so there is actually stuff to do. This leads into the discussion about the game pace. I was thinking that we should set the game speed at either epic or marathon so as to give y'all time for character development. If one turn is a year or even six months, that is a very big jump for a story. This means that updates to the game would have to also come at a slower pace. So I was thinking marathon pace about 70-150 turns in, with an update once a week of one to two turns. We could then adjust the pace as needed if the game gets slow, or y'all need more time to make your posts.

I also have been brainstorming ideas for potential areas in the world for roleplay. I want this to be as in-depth as we can possibly make it.
Spoiler :
  • King (civ leader + family)
  • Military unit leaders/great general
  • Workers (could represent slaves in the beginning?)
  • Missionaries/Great Profits
  • Nobles/Land owners (would control a city?)
  • Scouts/Explorers (could describe new lands and peoples)
  • Ship admiral/crew (potential for a ton of different stories)
  • Barbarian leaders (might be interesting to try and roleplay for the movements the game ai makes)
  • City-state leaders
  • Book/writing (could create a book or a writing not even connected to your other stories to help flesh out the game world)
  • Artwork/Poetry (if your character or someone elses does something noteworthy your could compose a song, write a poem or draw a picture)
  • Make a map (look at save and draw/create a realistic map, or you could draw a map of a local area)
