Copying the game CD

I was just wondering:

I am trying to install the game onto my new computer. However, the CD seems to be poorly balanced, as it creates this really loud noise when it spinns and locks up my computer. This has happened with a few other CDs so far (even though the majority worked), and every tech support (EA, Aicrosoft) has told me that it's caused by a balancing flaw in the CD and a very high speed of my DVD-drive (over 50x, in CD-ROM equivalent).

I was wondering whether I can copy the CD onto a brand-new CD-R, an approach that has proved successful with other games. Specifically, I'm wondering about the following two issues:

1. Is it legal for me to make such copy? (If not, I just switch back to Civ II, no big deal)

2. If yes, how do I copy the CD? I've had serious troubles doing it with a few other games and don't feel like wasting a CD-R if it does not work.

Thanks a lot!
