This was my first time, playing as Elohim/Einon Logos, to build the hero Corlindale.

I built him just in time as several stacks of warring Lanun were headed my way. I was able to promote Corlindale to get Earth III and Mind III.

As the first stack approached, I was able to take control through the Domination spell of a Lanun Beastmaster. Then, I used the Crush spell to, well, crush the two stacks making them easy pickin's for my support troops.

I thought, this is the most magnificient hero in FFH2!!!

I let it go to my head, however, and set out for some payback on Falamar. I set across some open territory toward Lanun lands.

Then, disaster struck!

Out of the blue, Khazad, who I have had good relationships with the whole game in one turn ended our open borders agreement, declared war, and killed Corlindale with a %$#@! Dwarven Assassin. I was so pissed I almost threw my computer out the window.

But, what can you do when the AI decides to pull a Pearl Harboresque move like this? I wanted to wipe out the Khazad, but I had to travel through treacherous Lanun territory to get to him. Grrr.

Anyway, a couple of questions on Corlindale?

1. His strength is only 1. I managed to get him up to Combat V, but I'm not sure if that didn't anything or not. His strength still showed as 1. I think it is confusing as some strengths of units are modified, others are not.

2. Anyway, he has to be one of the weakest heroes. How do you protect a guy like this? It goes back to the old Shadow strategy, I guess. Even though you might be able to see attackers like Assassins, with roads and several MPs, they are able to scoot out of the fog of war and kill a weak hero like Corlindale. How can you protect him without setting up some sort of phalanx around him?

3. I am confused as to weather he can attack or not. When he got up to 100XP, I tried to attack wounded units (enemy horsemen that withdrew from battle and had low strength). Sometimes he could attack and others I wasn't able to do so. I know I had not cast a spell before trying to attack. So, I couldn't advance his XP above 100 before he was killed.

Anyway, a very fun hero while he was around.

RIP Corlindale. :(

Try stacking a weaker unit with him to act as a "food taster" since (I think) Assassins have the 'marksman' promo. Workers have 0 str, so they may work. :) Of course, you should probably bring more than one, And stack some bruiser(s) and/or archer(s) with him.

Heroes ought not travel alone in this world, tough as they may be. This is a lesson I learned in MoM.

The Combat promos translate into tougher creatures summoned by that caster (again, as I recall).

Rather than throwing your computer out the window, I'd take that as justification to go back to the most recent auto-save. ;)

Put him on a boat. Assassins should not normally be able to reach a person on a boat.

Royal guards have guardsman but those can only be used in an aristocracy.

uhm, is the guardsman promotion a real counter to the marksman one ?

Actually, I think it isn't. Guardsman has the unit strength count 50% higher for purposes of choosing a defender, iirc. Not going to be helpful against marskman, though if someone's experience is contrary to this, maybe I'm wrong.

Be grateful for the added challenge ;) And build the Shrine of the Champion and use it to give all your units dwarf slaying. :)

I like your first selection, and I think workers would likely be the only unit weaker than him. ;)

No, I never send heroes out alone. This was a good sized stack of units led by a Beastmaster.

Corlindale was not able to summone anything. His two most powerful spells were Dominion and Crush. I guess I shouldn't have bothered getting Combat V for him.

Yeah, I thought about going back to save, but I stopped doing that some time ago as it takes away from the game IMO.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Do the Eholim have accesss to any units with the guardsman promotion? Maybe via the Order??

I've been playing Elohim with the Order as my religion, but I didn't see the Guardsmen promotion available to any of my units. I have the Defender promotion as long as I stay within my civ's borders, but in this case I was headed out to attack Falamar.

I think the Assassins can be pretty powerful units mid-game now, especially with the poison bonus they have.

Again, I was out beyond my borders.

hahaha, yeah, that Pearl Harbor move by the AI really had me appreciating the challenge! :crazyeye: And, yes, I did get busy building the Shrine of Champions and setting out to punish those damn dwarves!

or just stack some shadows with sentry with him and when they see a shadow they can attack that shadow

This was mid-game (epic) and there were no shadows in the game yet.

Yes, I think having a unit with the Sentry ability probably would have enabled me to see the Dwarven Assassin, but no way would I have known Khazad would declare war on me and kill Corlindale in one quick turn like that.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I only play land maps, usually the Fantasy Realm map which only has a few lakes/small seas.

Just thought of something else, give him water II and use water walking and have him travel on those few lakes whenever possible.

Corlindale is meant to be sacrificed for peace or used very tentaviely as a powerful mage IMHO. I don't know what you were thinking giving him Combat V.

Yes, I know that now. I did say it was the first time I got Corlindale and that is one of the great things about FFH2 - playing different civs and learning the capabilities.

But, I will disagree with your main purpose of him.

I really don't need peace as I am playing with Basium who will declare war every few turns anyway. Why sacrifice Corlindale for a few turns of peace?

Also, with Basium's numerous Angels, especially since the Counter hit 100, we are doing quite well with war, thank you.:)

Without any reagents at my disposal Corlindale is the best mage I can get. But, you are right - I have learned to use him very tentatively and carefully next time.

Well, even without Basium, peace tends to be temporary. The main benefit is you get to half the AC, but with it already over 100, there is little point in that. If you have no reagents, I would not sacrifice him either.
