Goodbye Ozymandias

I see. Just because I've known about Oz's illness doesn't make it less sad.

Goodbye, Oz-man. :wavey:

I didn't know Oz on any kind of personal level like many others on here did, I just knew of him as one of the creators on here that was extremely generous with his time and knowledge. But from the outpouring of fellow community members it is obvious that he was so much more than that, that he was a kind soul and a good friend. This board and this world is a lesser place without him in it. My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and all of his friends.

Devastated.. :( :( Ozy was always a big supporter of my preservation work and would send me the nicest msgs. I'd tell him each year how I was in the final stretches of my Civ2 work and would get to Civ3 soon and he'd send me stuff to help.. but my Civ2 modding & preservation work kept spiraling and more years have gone by..

I thought I'd only checked in with him a few months ago but it turns out it was june last year darn it.. I wish I'd msged him this year to see how he was going. :( This was my last convo with him.. he was happy, busy, excited and driven about his latest projects (did he manage to get a release of Terra Fantasia out? as it's his last great work). Now frozen in time as his last msg to me, this is how I'll remember him, passionately creating until the end!

.
Another slice of a convo I had with him that I wanna share.. my plan was when I eventually got to the Civ3 preservation work, that instead of using my normal project name I gave my Civ1 & 2 project, I'd call the Civ3 one "The Great Library Reborn" in honour of him and his old lost Great Library that meant a lot to him and the community. I was originally going to surprise him but as the years went on my Civ2 work blew out and I worried about his health, so I decided to tell him the plan early, and I'm so glad I did that now as it made him happy. I wish I could have kicked off the project before he left us though. :( Whether it's me or someone else in the future, if there's ever a big Civ3 modding cataloging and archiving collection project here let's make this name a reality and tribute it to him and his work.

Very sorry to hear that Oz has left us. I've never been a part of the III community. I did not know him, but I have always known OF him. My regards and condolences to the III folk here.

I was just checking the other day how many of us are left. A lot of the great modders have passed or missing from the civ3 community. This is sad but what's to expect? We are all getting old but it still hurts every time this happens. Rest in peace Oz. You will still be with us every time we use one of your creations.

Maybe now, almost three weeks since the saddening news about Ozymandias, it can be asked what the number of members of the community who have (according to what is known) died is?
I am aware of four, but are there more?

Blake00, thank you very much for remembering us to the memoriam thread and for adding Ozy to it.

I think that the memoriam thread should be stickied. I mean a thread called rightfully "In Memoriam" and than it is swimming away among thousands of other threads ?

There are some additional facts about Ozy that seem to be not mentioned yet:

- Ozy sponsered the costs for the models of tons of Civ 3 units that were created by Wyrmshadow and that we are using in many of our games.
- Ozy tried to buy the source code of Civ 3.
- Ozy started an initiative for programming a better Civ 3.

I was so shocked by the post about his passing away, that I cannot give a like to the post that informed us about that fact, because of the very sad news in that post. I want to end my post with the kind term, that Ozy used several times:

Ozy you were and you are a gentleman and a scholar - and a friend.

I was thinking the same thing but figured I'd better check with Laurana & Quintillus first, but I just remembered I am on the official moderator list for the Civ3 creation area so I can make the call in this area. Have pinned it. :)

Oh, Oz. This one hits hard. It was not unexpected, but that doesn't make it any less of a loss.

If I may eulogize him a bit: It occurred to me a long time ago, and I wish I'd mentioned it to him, that Oz would ironically not live up to his poetic namesake. "Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains..." Way back in the first decade awards jury we named a special award for him, because he was such a force of creativity without actually publishing anything of his own. Instead his work was in encouraging, supporting, and cataloguing the work of everyone else. He inspired new ideas; he tracked down information; he spent a tremendous effort (just look at his profile) in repopulating the database. His enthusiasm and dedication were infectious and, I have no doubt, contributed to the longevity of our community. This forum is what remains, in part thanks to Ozymandias.

He was, as always, a gentleman and a scholar. :hatsoff:

That is sad to hear. He always had great insights and contributions.
Memento mori.
