When you combine 2 units into corp or army, your higher lvl unit is absorbing the lower lvl unit. And there is a problem: it is always like this. no matter which unit you have selected and make order, which unit attacked and have no movement left. It leads into cheap moves when your unit destroys enemy that standed in heavy protected hex, but you use it to make corp and it disappear. You killed one unit, made corp, enemy get no exp, no kill. It is even more weird because to make this move, your must be cautious that your "kamikadze" unit will not have more exp after attack than second unit. In my opinion tactic planning should not look like this.
I think this problem is caused by imprefect combining mechanic: lower lvl unit simply disappear and better unit get additional star. There is no more advanced comparing system, which would make a difference which unit is selected when you make order to create corp. It is also connected to the case discussed there https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/are-corps-and-armies-even-worth-it.601705/page-3
that corp always holds the %exp bonus of the higher level unit, no matter if fresh, lower level unit has higher exp bonus from buildings.
