I can't believe how corrupt some of my cities are even in modern times. Do these people think they can just not pay taxes? Or not work at their jobs when fulfilling government contracts just because they are far from the capital? Why did Firaxis do it this way? Why bother to conquer the world when most of it will become useless?

Hey eyrei, is that really necessary????? I mean, whining about corruption after it has become modable in the editor??????????

I`m quite OK on it now, I set it to 75% and that`s OK now.

It ain't folks not doing their job. Corruption and waste represents kickbacks, corporate welfare, mafia infiltration, etc. It is irritating though when all extra shields go to waste - it should be proportional. And killer, as I mentioned in my post on mod uselessness, I get a guilty feeling fudging with the rules, so sickening corruption seems here to stay.

I couldn't agree more. Even with the editor, the default amount should be lower so we could play standard games without all that annoying waste.

I have changed my strategy with the latest patch (the better effectiveness of courthouses and wltkd on corruption). I usually rush some culture (temple or library) first, just to start expanding borders and to reduce culture flips. Next, I will irrigate and RR several squares to get up to pop 6 ASAP, then the city can usually give back 3-4 shields due to wltkd. Then I'll start building a courthouse. I will usually rush it at some point, then the corruption drops down to ~50% in the cities far from the capitol/FP. This is not the behavior seen before the latest patch, where you could never get more than two shields per city (usually only one). I personally like the corruption - it adds a different dimension to the strategy. Of course, some like to change it in the editor to remove it completely. I've done that, but it seems to be too much advantage to the human (at least on the lower three levels). Maybe I need to try lowering it partially, and not all the way.

0% was insane, there really is no corruption and every city returns all shields. Thought it was fun - building temples, wonders, libraries, everything everywhere, until 50 Immortals strolled across my border. Apparently the AI built only war units for some reason. That was the end of that game and experiment.

But I've built courthouse and Police Station in far-away cities, and, even with WLTK day, I have 26 out of 28 shields wasted, what I am doing wrong:cry: ? Of course, corruption is 56 out of 59, or something like that:mad:

While we're on the topic, do building like courthouses and police stations reduce corruption AND waste? People talk as though they do, but I've only seen "reduces corruption" in both the editor and the civilopedia.

Kilroy-

Courthouses and police stations reduce corruption AND waste. In previous patches it reduced corruption/waste by about 25% each (if you are LOSING 4 shields, you might get 1 back). With v1.17f? and later, the reduction was slightly better. WLTKD reduces waste only.
However, corruption/waste is also affected by the optimal # of cities, which is why courthouses/police station have little or no effect in some cities. If you are way over the optimal # of cities (having double the # of cities, or more), those distant cities can not be helped at all.
There is an article written by Alexman that gives all the numerical formulas for corruption. I believe the article has been moved to the strategy articles section.

Evincar-

See my above comments, also corruption/waste can never exceed 95%, so that city that was losing 26 out of 28 shields, would have probably been losing even another shield had it not been for the 95% max limit.

You complain too much Eyre.
I never saw you around, and when I see you, you're always whining.
Unacceptable!! :D
Stop trashing the game!

Yes there is a lot of corruption, and in some cities it is more than they produce. So increase your markets, add banks. They make tax collection easier, and they indirectly reduce corruption. I've got some huge cities far from the capitol with little corruption and I don't have a police station there. I do have courthouses, banks, marketplaces, and airports. Your workers seem to get more productive even if you don't have a democracy. Give people a place to put their money instead of lining the pockets of organized crime.

Oh and those unhappy workers? Make tax collectors and scientists out of them.

Switch to communism, corruption is not affected by distance. Built courthouse and police station in every city before going commi. Put 4 MP in each city and manage to have WLChancelor Day.

If your still playing standard (completley unmodded) games I have much sympathy with you but regard you as a prat. You are not getting the most out of civ3 (thats why I never plat GOTM3) - before the little slider thing came out I had a better way of dealing with corruption - I gave cultural buildings the reduces corruption flag. Try it - then we you rush buy temples you get an immediate reduction in corruption

Closing because eyrei is a troll. BTW, Cary sucks! ;) j/k
