COTM 05 Spoiler2: Entering the Industrial Age

AAC was faster then my conquest approach. Though I could have achieved it 10 turns earlier. Final result conquest in 330AD. Researched techs up to Chivalry, Engineering and Navigation. The biggest mistake I researched Navigation way too late. I'd have benefitted from lake travel considerably earlier. That delayed conquest 5-8 turns.

1100BC Entered Medieval
730BC Chivalry
50AD Navigation

This COTM provided much potential. Very good conquest and domination wins are posted. I consider 600AD Diplomacy and pre1000AD Space ship are certainly possible. I should have took one of those goals. Now I get beaten by SirPleb again :D Can't help it I played before the first spoiler.

I disagree completely. The early dates you listed for Diplo and Space are IMO simply not possible in this game. The AI is WAY TOO INEPT to be any help at all. I am by no means a master of research, but I'd wager nobody would be able to beat a 1300AD Space Victory.

If someone can prove me wrong, more power to them. I have played this game to completion 3 times now, and have not beat a 1500AD launch. It would be interesting to see some of you top players going back to see if you can get a very early launch.

@Hergrom: I really doubt it's appropriate to go into details about space win dates in this spoiler thread, but you're wrong about the 1300AD wager, though I do agree that Kuningas might have overestimated the possible space and diplo dates. I think 900AD diplo and 1200AD space are more realistic dates, considering the ineptness of AI research (especially in this game)...

See my AA writeup

I entered the MA in 270BC, which is actually very late considering I am going for Space. I have settled as much land as I can, as I am butted up against Greece and Aztecs. I did not write down a city count, and I am at work, so cannot check. My core cities, except fo thos building wonders, all have libararies and are working on marketplaces, harbors and aquaducts.

Research

Greece received Engineering as its free tech. I started my research with Feudalism, then Monotheism, Theology, Education and Astronomy. I traded Monotheism and Feudalism to Greece for Engineering. I brought all other civs to all 3 of the 1st tier MA techs. The only tech I got from the other civs in the MA was Invention. I purposely cleared the entire top of the tree before going the lower.

Mistakes: I researched Navigation. No need to research this.

Golden Age

I completed the Colossus in 30AD. Then the Hangings Gardens in 50AD, starting my Golden Age. I used the extra production to build Medieval Infantry, and complete some infrastructure. Univerities came during this time. The Forbidden Palace was completed in 90AD, about 4 tiles west of my capital.

War

In 280AD I declared war on Greece. I had a pretty easy time in battle until taking the capital. Hopelites fortified on a hill suck! I was delayed by lack of roads. The AI really is inept at this level. I lost many units taking the capital, which stalled my attack until re-enforcements could arrive. During the war, I completed Copernuicus' in my capital (450AD). I got my first leader in 510AD, and built an army ( I really miss being able to rush great wonders). In 610AD, Greece was down to 1 city, and I signed peace.

2nd War

In 650AD, the Celts sneak attack with 1 warrior. :) I sign an alliance with Aztecs, and the Celts never attack my territory again. The Celts did do a number on the Aztecs, however, and nearly destroy them. I was able to take a couple of former Aztec cities, getting Gems in the bargain.

Entering the Industrial Age

In 760AD I entered the Industrial Age. Greece gets Steam Power as its free tech. My civ covers all of "Mordor" (as someone called it earlier), all of the former Greek empire, and a bit of the Aztec lands. I am NOT at a 4 turn research rate, averaging 5 or 6 turns per tech. Carthage has become my premier trading partner. They are the only civ who can buy my techs, and are funding my current research.

I just don't see it happening, but I have seen some amazing things from the masters here. Hmmm, wonder if Predator would make a difference...

[c3c] COTM05 Open

Just submitted my game. A Jason score of 11844 and a Fireaxis Score of 6748. Played well, but made quite some errors, see my comments below. I guess I should have finished in BC-area, either by domination or conquest, still game went ok.

Game thought line
I followed the same logic as some others. I figured I needed the Pyramids for more rapid growth and more shields during GA and forces build-up. Build them in 1000 BC.
Because of Carthago on island, I figured I needed GLighthouse as well. Finished them in 470 BC. Carthago & Japan were conquered with forces sailed in.
I finished the ToA in 510BC, as its temples would boost some land area gain and make people happy. No thoughts on domination victory……
I choose to become a Republic to get quicker to Chivalry. This was probably wrong, for BC conquest Monarchy is better for unit cost.
Also build roads to Rome, Delhi & Entremont for forces deployment.

MA write up: cont'd from 1st spoiler
950 BC Japan makes demand. I refuse, war!
925 BC Peace with Greece for Sparta & 51 gold
875 BC 3 Greek hoplites show up at Sparta. I Gift Greece to MA. They get Monotheism as free tech. Declare war again. I trade CoL for 49 gold with Aztecs. Horses connected
825 BC I enter GA
800 BC A horde of Horsemen ransacks one of my cities. Made sure I didn’t have gold, so accept for the Barracks build in progress nothing serious gets lost.
775 BC Trade Philosophy for 17 gold with Rome. Build embassy with Celts to ally them against the Japanese. But, they only know Rome & Aztecs. Feudalism researched. Make peace with Greece. Trade Monotheism against Feudalism. Start on Chivalry (7 turns).
690 BC Celts know Japan. I trade Poytheism & alliance against Japan for 70 gold.
650 BC Discovery of Chivalry. Science is put at zero from know on. Slider (9-0-1)
610 BC Aztecs finish Great Library
530 BC Start war with Aztecs. Ally Celts against them for Currency against 47 gold. Japan finishes Oracle.
510 BC Greek destroyed. I capture the Greay Library. Finish ToA in Machu Picchu.
490 BC FP finished. Entremont finishes MoM. Gems connected. Slider 10-0-0 from now on.
470 BC Lighthouse finished.
450 BC 1st Leader. :) Makes Army.
410 BC GA ends
390 BC Start war against Rome. Trade Literature for 37 gold with Carthago.
350 BC 2nd Leader. Army again
330 BC I have 27 knights & 8 MI.
290 BC Ivory connected. I intercept a bypassing Carthaginian Galley. To make sure it doesn’t bring a possible settler somewhere I sink it. War against Carthago starts. I also start war against Celts on a settler/spearman couple that passes my road working group.
270 BC Aztecs destroyed.
250 BC Delhi finishes Colossus. Spices Connected
230 BC Start war on India.
190 BC Rome destroyed.
170 BC 3rd Leader.
150 BC Loose almost all my battles. BAD RNG.
130 BC Make temporary peace with Celts & Carthago for cities. Japan still doesn’t want to trade cities in peace deals. Loose a lot of battles again. Recovering from last two turns probably will cost me a BC-win.
110 BC 4th leader against Carthago.
90 BC 5th leader against Celts. Aztecs destroyed.
70 BC Carthago sets two workers on hills I’d like to land on. :(
50 BC Temporary peace with Celts for Alesia + Worker, with Japan for Nara & 26 gold
10 AD Carthago destroyed.
30 AD Celts destroyed. Take Kyoto. Japan settles for temporary peace giving me his last 2 cities. Trade worker for CoL.
50 AD Destroy Japan by taking Osaka. Score: 6748, 44% land area. I have 30 knights, 16 MI, 5 Armies.

Aftermath thoughts:
-Switch to Monarchy not to Republic.
-Should have started to build FP earlier. Finished it 3 turns before end of GA.
-Send too many units up to Rome – missed them against Celts
-Galley chaining: why didn’t I think of that?
-Domination victory: I had the ToA in 510 BC, I guess I could have won earlier this way….
-Could have send less knights and more MI’s to Japan, would have been cheaper/quicker.
-Could have raised score if I would have build settlers earlier, and expand.

Good parts:
-settling for peace, get cities, and continue the war. 1st time I thought of that. Got me quite some (remote) cities I didn't have to fight for, nor to travel to. :)

Still, another great game from the GOTM-team. Tx. :goodjob:

tx Kuningas & Space Oddity.

Just scanned through the COTM05 spoilers, and found out I did score very well, although I didn't feel that I played very well. If I look at the mistakes I mentioned (a lot) my guess is that for this map my conquest could have been achieved around 100 BC, and domination even earlier, not even thinking about what SirPleb could have achieved with knights..... ;)
I'm curious what the predicted earliest Jason win dates are/were for conquest & domination. We'll find out early next month....
On this particular map, with Carthago such a long (sailing) distance away, domination was the quickest win with the highest scoring potential, congrats to those who achieved this :goodjob: .
If I have time I'll replay my QSC save, now focusing on domination, and see what comes out. Just to give me a feel if I'm right.

Open.

Entered the MA in 350BC with the Greeks about to die in a few turns. Going for domination but somehow, I forgot about ToA.

Aztec War (150BC-380AD): Started the war just after upgrading swords to mace. Capture Technotitlan and the pyramids in 30BC. [dance] They only have one city left, beyond Indian territory.

Roman War (110BC-400AD): Captured a few cities before upgrading swords, and delay conquest of Rome until 270AD, the turn they completed SoZ for me.

Somewhere in the middle of those wars, I upgraded horses and shut down research.

Indian War(430AD-490AD)

Celts War(500AD-600AD)

650AD: Domination Victory!

Jason Score: 10801, my first victory over 10K! [party]

I thought I did a good score and had a chance of getting in the top 20 this time, but looking at the other results, I doubt it.

My biggest mistake was to forget about ToA which was never completed by anyone. I did concentrate workers to build roads toward Rome and Celts, but not enough. I lost some time connecting conquered cities that were not on the path to those civs.

As usual, my start is still very slow compared to others, even those who did not get as good a Jason Score. Most players entered the MA about 300 years before me. I do not know what I do wrong, but I should work on that.

It was the first game I completely neglected defense leaving most of my towns completely undefended. The surprised early Roman attacked showed me that cities can be reconquered very fast and building garrison on this level is diverting resources and units that should go toward attack.

Goal: Domination

At the end of the Ancient Ages, I was preparing to collect my first scalp, that of Montezuma. He should have completed the Pyramids by the time I enter his Palace, so that was my incentive. My swordsmen stacks are currently marching towards Aztec borders.

630 BC – Establish Embassy with Celts in preparation for MA. I need to draw the Celts into this war so that they don’t get too powerful, so that they can get a despotic GA, and primarily so they don’t declare on me.

Inca-Aztec War of 490BC – 50AD

490 BC – DW on Aztecs. Sign MA with Celts for CoL. Capture Tlateloco. Try to avoid dogpile, so I also sign MA with Greece and sell them Currency for 10gpt and 15g. This gives Greeks access to Middle Ages. They receive Monotheism.
470 BC – Athens builds Mausoleum. Kyoto builds Oracle. Capture Xochicalco.
330 BC – Tenochitilian builds Pyramids  . Learn feudalism.
310 BC – During my capture of Tenochitilian and the Pyramids, I get my first MGL.
230 BC – Learn Literature. Give Greeks Feudalism in exchange for Monotheism + 7gpt + 51g.
210 BC – Capture Texcoco. Found Chuito.
170 BC – The Greeks demand Literature  . We decline.
150 BC – Sell Japanese CoL for 110g.
110 BC – Capture Teotihuacan. Found Chuquiapo.
70 BC – Carthage builds the Great Lightouse. The Celts give me gold to regonotiate alliance against Aztecs. Found Huanuco Pampo.
30 BC – Capture Atzcaptzalco. Capture Calixtlahuaca.
10 BC – Capture Tlaxcala.
10 – Capture Tlacopan.
30 – Learn Engineering.
50 – Capture Tzintuntzen and destroy the Aztecs.

90 – Machu Picchu builds the Heroic Epic. Entremont builds the ToA. OK, I guess I know who my next target is :) ! The Celts still have not linked up their iron source yet. They should be a pushover with the momentum that my swordsmen and medieval infantry are building up.
110 – Rome builds SoZ. :hmm: could be interesting later…

Inca-Celtic War of 190AD-390AD

190 – Declare war on Celts. Get Embassy with Rome and sign MA against Celts. I don’t really want to protect my western borders from an Ancient Cavalry onslaught.
230 – Learn Chivalry just as I link up my horses :hammer: . Capture Gergovia. Capture Augustodurum and get 2nd MGL.
250 – Capture Eboracum.
260 – Kyoto builds Hanging Gardens.
270 – Capture Agedincum. Sign MA with India for Philosophy.
290 - Get 3rd MGL. Found Tamboccha.
340 – Decide that now is best time to trigger GA, so I do. :)
350 – Learn Invention. Capture Entremont and the ToA. Found Huaras.
360 – Capture Alesia. Capture Lugdunum.
370 – Capture Camulodunum and Verlamium.
380 – Capture Richborough.
390 – Capture Cataractonium and Burdigala. Destroyed the Celts.

Now it is time for the Greeks to pay for their last insulting demand. My knights will make mincemeat of their hoplites.

Inca-Greek War of 400AD – 570AD

400 – The ToA pays its dues and fills in all the gaps in my empire. Declare war on the Greeks an bring Rome in for 20gpt. Capture Sparta.
410 – Learn Gunpowder.
420 – Capture Knossos.

Inca – Indian War of 440AD – 580AD

440 – The Indians are far too easy a target and my warriors in the northern half of the continent are bored. Declare War on Indians. Capture Calcutta.
450 – Athens builds SunTzu’s. Capture Athens with its Mausoleum and SunTzu’s. Capture Lahore. Capture Pharsalos.
460 – Corinth builds the Great Wall. Capture Delhi.
470 – Cuzco builds the Pentagon. Capture Corinth with its Great Wall. Capture Bangalore, Madras and Delphi.
480 – Learn Chemistry. Capture Bombay and Thermopylae.
490 – Build Forbidden Palace in Arequipa. Capture Herakleia.
520 – Capture Argos.

Inca – Roman War of 530AD – 660AD

530 - The Romans sneak Attack us :hmm: . Oh well, I was going to declare on them in a couple of turns anyway... Capture Karachi and Mycenae. The Indians have a solitary city I didn’t know about well behind Rome’s borders.
540 – Our glorious Golden Age ends. Learn Metallurgy.
550 – Capture Lutetia and Ravenna. Get 4th MGL.
560 – Capture Neapolis.
570 – Capture Ephesus and Destroy the Greeks.
580 – Capture Veii and Hispalis. Sign PT with Indians and MA against Rome and get Monarchy and 1gpt. Hopefully the Romans will sweep them aside.
590 – Learn MilTrad :hammer:
610 – Capture Pisae. Reach Virtual Domination. Decide that my Domination date is nothing special after reading all the Ancient Age spoilers so I’m probably going to try and milk this game til the end. I’ve never milked before, but I’m got some spare time coming up.
630 – Learn Theology. Capture Rome and the Statue of Zeus. Capture Cumae. Have to Abandon Burdigala. Raze Byzantium.
640 – Raze Virconium and Antium.
650 – Redeclare war on Indians. Raze Kolhapur and destroy the Indians. Abandon Argos and Richborough.
660 – Raze Pompeii and destroy the Romans.

I’m now 20 squares under the limit. I might be able to squeeze a couple out here and there with some carefully controlled expansion, but I need to save 9 squares for a harbour town on Carthage island, so that I can use the three luxuries there. I am currently trading for these luxuries with Carthage, so I’m not going to clear Japan away until I learn Navigation. Otherwise my trade route will be blocked.

680 – Learn Education.
720 – Learn Astronomy.

Inca-Japan War of 760 – 870AD

760 – Learn Navigation. Declare War and sign MA with Carthage.
770 – Raze Matsuyama.
800 – Learn Banking and Raze Izumo.
810 – Raze Shimonseki.
820 – Raze Nara.
830 – Raze Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Nagoya and Tokyo.
850 – Raze Kyoto and demolish The Oracle and Hanging Gardens. Learn Physics.
860 - Get 5th MGL whilst razing Satsuma and Osaka.
870 – Leptis Magna build the Great Library. Raze Edo. This leaves Japan one city on a little four tile island to the east of the continent. Start shipping troops over to Carthage island in preparation for an ROP rape.

880 – Cuzco builds Copernicus’ Observatory.
900 – Learn Theory of Gravity.
940 – Carthage builds Knight’s Templar. Better get a move on.
950 – Learn Magnetism and enter IA.

My cavalry have just been postioned and are ready to raze key Carthage towns. But that’s a story for another day. ;)

I know that around here I was leaving the MA, but I took my time as I went for Free Artistry and things like that.

1535AD -- Rome captured by India
I think DOW'ed me when I asked them to leave, sometime few turns before. I was spread to thin and their WE came in what was likely undefended

1575AD -- Bangalore captured

1580AD -- Madras captured

1585AD -- Kolhapur captured, India vanquished

1630AD -- If not mistaken, Greece unexpectedly DOWed me. Although I was bringing in troops on both sides I was not ready and I did not expect it. I instantly Allied with Japan and gave them RoP. Their fast Samauris proved invaluable. However, I wanted all the Greek land and didn't want them to get any. I let them clean up stragglers and anything Greece tried to do to pillage or capture workers

Troy destroyed and Thermopylae and Knossos captured, and another MGL created

1635AD -- Ephesus captured

Universal Suffrage built in Xanadu

Not sure at what point I was in the Industrial Age, but since I built this Wonder, I guess this entry should stop now
