COTM 08: Results and congratulations

Definitely my 20k date was beatable. My goal was to finish around the best date with as much Jason as I could squeeze out, not to play a bleeding edge 20k game.

I passed on building the FP in the 20k city and doing a Palace jump, and only added 3 Workers on the way to size 12, waiting for after MoM to do that even, so as not to have to run a very high Lux rate. I also couldn't invest in ultra early warfare to try for MGLs for an early Heroic Epic, FP, ect, and when I did get MGLs they generally went towards Armies. I only rushed the Military Academy, Palace (rather late in the game), and Apollo with MGLs. All together they might have cut off a couple turns.

Still I think I wasn't too far off the actual best date, 20 turns maybe. My extra investment in the rest of my empire allowed me to keep the Egyptians from trading Ivory or building Zeus themselves. The additional income from not having to run a high Lux rate allowed me to set up embassies earlier and get all the AI involved in warfare through alliances. If I had pumped up the 20k city right from the start I couldn't have done that as well. The tech rate would have been faster, so more wonder spillover and earlier starts to AI Wonder builds. Likely would have lost on HG and at least one more of the MA Wonders, and may have missed the Philosophy->Republic slingshot too if I was running a higher Lux rate.

Keep in mind that not everybody is actually playing the entire time the game is active. They may just leave the game running a couple of hours. I wonder what a more accurate amount of time would be.

I accidently left COTM09 on overnight and the game couter now says that I've played 36 hours when the actual game play is closer to 16.

Great job to everyone. I think the quality of play and the quality of spoiler info was tremendous on this one :D

Congratulations Aeson! It is great that you are the first to get four awards at once to make this an even more special gold, you deserve it!

Aha an opportunity to put a critical note in a celebration thread .

Aeson's game was quite amazing, but to give him credit for the four awards is quite absurd. The 20K shield is a actually a sign of failure: Aeson did his very best to score as high as possible as fast as possible. Getting in these circumstances the award for lowest scoring is not a success.

In GOTM37 SirPleb got the cow and the 20K. He didn't get the 20K shield because I refused to shoot the X-man in 1600AD, but just kept fooling around till 20K hit me in the late 1800's. Would SirPleb have been a better player if I did shoot the X-man?

It is just as absurd to celebrate Aeson for the fourth award as it is to say that Klarius is a lousy conquest-player for only getting the shield in GOTM36.

BTW it's fun to critise in the celebration threads.

While not taking anything away from a fine game, the fastest and lowest scoring 20k awards will always go to the same player if there is only one 20k game submitted.

I congratulate Aeson on proving what he set out to do - that a 20k game COULD win a medal, and win gold it did.

Congrats to all the winners!!! :D

The masters have shown us again that with skill any victory condition can earn medals. :worship:

Thanks to you all who have taught us so much! :thanx:

Granted, my first shield may not show that I am learning, but I am thrilled about it... :  :bounce:
