Definitely my 20k date was beatable. My goal was to finish around the best date with as much Jason as I could squeeze out, not to play a bleeding edge 20k game.
I passed on building the FP in the 20k city and doing a Palace jump, and only added 3 Workers on the way to size 12, waiting for after MoM to do that even, so as not to have to run a very high Lux rate. I also couldn't invest in ultra early warfare to try for MGLs for an early Heroic Epic, FP, ect, and when I did get MGLs they generally went towards Armies. I only rushed the Military Academy, Palace (rather late in the game), and Apollo with MGLs. All together they might have cut off a couple turns.
Still I think I wasn't too far off the actual best date, 20 turns maybe. My extra investment in the rest of my empire allowed me to keep the Egyptians from trading Ivory or building Zeus themselves. The additional income from not having to run a high Lux rate allowed me to set up embassies earlier and get all the AI involved in warfare through alliances. If I had pumped up the 20k city right from the start I couldn't have done that as well. The tech rate would have been faster, so more wonder spillover and earlier starts to AI Wonder builds. Likely would have lost on HG and at least one more of the MA Wonders, and may have missed the Philosophy->Republic slingshot too if I was running a higher Lux rate.
