The time has come for the second COTM20 spoiler to begin.

So -if you haven't all gone to the other forum playing CIV... :ack: ;)
...what happened during the Middle Ages?

As the thread title says, in order to participate to this thread you need to:
- Have reached the Industrial Age
- Have a (reasonably) full knowledge of the world map.

We are always curious to read what happened in your games!

i'll start from the beginning.

i settled south where the others did. i built a scout and sent the other one north. the first hut along the northern coast produced a settler. i moved the settler to the river near aztec lands. after building a few settlers and sending them to this area i jumped my palace to more furtile land right next to the aztec expansion.

being so close i knew a war was necessary and without much difficulty i took care of the aztecs and began populating the world with american citizens.

i played a boring an uninspired game from there.

having no horses greatly slowed any military strategy, so i considered a space victory. the problem here was that i had too many units from the war with aztecs and my tech pace was hurt badly. instead of disbanding though i moved toward the celts with the intention of taking some of their land. they declared on me first. i stopped their attack and eventually i took a couple cities before deciding for peace. after that i concentrated on science. for some reason even without high unit costs i couldn't manage a continuous 4 turn pace. maybe it was that i had less optimal cities around my capital because it was on the coast, and there were so few rivers to add commerce.

around this time i discovered the whole world, and realized i was in good standing with everyone. so my plan then switched to a U.N. victory. as i entered the IA i played with the intention of keeping everyone polite or better, and moving through the techs as quickly as i could.

i was so unfocused after the war with the aztecs and considering my fortune of the settler and palace jump i played an awful game. i think not having fast units for so long really took the steam out of my game. i never realized how much easier a game progresses with horses. iron has been said to be the most important resource, but early on personally i think i'd rather have horses.

i am very interested to see how this game plays out. thanks to the staff for keeping civ3 going for those who remain. i am a bit burned out at the moment as i have been playing alot of this game during my recent time of unemployment. i will put the disk away for a week or two to recharge for a more focused game next month.

Abe was in a quandary, he had planned on a quick conquest using self imposed restrictions to incorporate additional challenges. Now the newly received sub-ether communiqué from Mursilis was sent to congratulate Hannibal for achieving the Cow Award for his work on the most recent colonization. Abe decided that the lack of a fast attack force (horses), coupled with this new information, would combine to change his goal to that of surpassing Hannibal’s performance. He would continue with his original research restriction (only required until there were none left) and only capture cities where a wonder was built while razing the rest. However instead of ending without another tribe remaining, he would continue his expansion to the domination limit and then raze the rest of the world. Having encountered a pair of small islands that would hold the survivors, he would then maximize growth and happiness while completing the remaining wonders.

It was only 350 BC, but he had a new purpose. The Celts would be the next to feel his wrath as the sneak attacked and killed a pair of workers and Lewis, though they had no success in attacking the spearmen behind the walls on the hill in Philadelphia. By allying with the Aztecs, Abe had restricted the only threatened city to Philadelphia. Abe was upset by a wonder cascade that forced him to settle for the Great Library in New York as Madrid built the Temple of Artemis to begin the cascade. Babylon built the Statue Zeus, London the Great Wall and Entremont the Mausoleum. In 230 BC the only elite unit (a warrior) defeated a wounded Celtic Archer and Washington was born and a Swordsman Army marched on the Celts. In 210 BC the Drake met England and soon after Babylon and Spain completing the world contacts. The new trio was slightly behind in tech and Abe quickly emptied their treasuries as he brought them to the Middle Ages. In 30 AD Atlanta completed the Forbidden Palace and soon new America cities began sprouting across the world. In 70 AD (after the Aztecs signed early) America sign peace with the Celts getting a pair of tundra cities. A Roman demand for currency was rebuffed as Abe had decided that he was not willing to be blackmailed again. The discovery of Engineering in 260 AD preceded the completion of the Hanging Gardens in New York which initiated the Golden Age of America. It was a peaceful golden age with the discovery of Feudalism, Invention, Gunpowder and Monotheism highlighting the science and the completion of the Heroic Epic in Atlanta and the Great Lighthouse in Madrid as the other noteworthy events. News of a massive barbarian sighting proved uneventful as they all moved to pillage a nearby Celtic city. The discovery of gunpowder provided the welcome sight of available saltpeter. We the high likelihood that the planet was without horses, musket men would be a powerful defensive force until tanks are available. As the Golden Age ended in 480 AD, Abe did get the terrible news that Baltimore had revolted and was now part of the Roman Empire. It was now time for the Aztecs to leave and with the capture of Tenochtitlan and the Pyramids in 500 AD it became evident that would happen soon. Another great leader formed an MDI army and with those two armies leading the troops against spearmen & archers (not a jaguar in sight) the Aztec cities began to disappear until 560 AD when Abe signed peace for a pair of tundra Aztec cities (only 4 left). All remained quiet until 720 AD except for a couple of discoveries (Theology & Chemistry) and another rebuff of Rome, when Spain landed a pair of warriors and declared war. That same year education was discovered (Great Library expired after providing zero techs) and Sun Tzu’s War Academy was completed in New York. Quickly Abe established embassies in the remaining four capitals and signed alliances against Spain with three other nations (Rome had yet to meet Spain).

In 770 AD Leonardo’s Workshop was completed in Washington and Abe embarked on a program to upgrade his military to hopefully postpone Celtic aggression, with the discovery of Astronomy & Physics, Abe widened his technology lead on the world and a trade with the Celts for Chivalry allow for Knights Templar to be started in New York. The discovery of the Theory of Gravity allowed for Atlanta to begin Newton’s University and with Washington building Copernicus’ and San Francisco building Sistine, Abe’s four main production cities were all tied up with wonder building. In 930 AD the remaining alliance (Celts & Babylon bailed early) against Spain ended and Abe signed peace a gained a whopping 10 pieces of gold.

“All right, you can have wines” Abe conceded to the Roman ambassador’s demand. This was just not the time to be getting involved in a war. Too much production was be poured into wonders to support a war effort at this time. With the completion of the Sistine Chapel in San Francisco, Abe was ready to finish off the Aztecs. War was declared in 990 AD and in 1000 AD a trio of happy events occurred as first an Elite MDI won and Sherman (3rd MGL) was born, secondly New York completed the Knights Templar and began producing to fill Sherman’s Army and finally Magnetism was discovered and research on the final Middle Age technology was begun.

Fifty years later as Rome and Japan entered into a brief war, the discovery of Metallurgy pushed America in the Industrial Age well before any other nation. At this point the Aztecs were down to two cities and both were being threatened by American armies. The third American Army now had it’s first Crusader and the rest of the world was struggling to stay with the American powerhouse of production and research.

Abe stood on the second floor veranda of the palace and watched the sun rise over the eastern ocean and contemplated the future. First he felt the need to finish off the Aztecs, but this would take little effort. Then the Celts were next unless someone else invited war from America. The Spanish had been steadily losing cities to Babylon and England and seemed to be on the verge of extinction. As Babylon was trailing the world in science, they could wait. That left three nations for Abe to consider. “I’m really in no hurry to begin overseas operations, so let’s wait for tanks to begin those campaigns” he thought. In the meantime he had two wonders (Copernicus & Newton) to complete and additional infrastructure (banks & universities) to add to his core cities. His guest worker staff had grown over forty in number and they were busy improving all of his current land and once the Aztecs were gone, he would unleash them on Montezuma’s oddly developed lands. A couple of new tricks had been added to his repertoire, so now his workers first wooded tundra, then chopped the forest before mining the lands. With Steam Power on the horizon this work force would soon begin adding railroads to his nation (assuming coals available).

I entered the MA in 410BC with 10 cities. After meeting the rest of the world and seeing no horses anywhere I decided to push through with a peaceful endeavor. The Celts declared on me after I refused a demand. But they only sent a few unit to attack. No major action in that war. Midway thru this Age I declared on the Aztecs to gain more cities and their 2 luxes.

I continued to research and improve my empire. I complete the Middle Ages in 990AD. I’m up to 25 cities and the Aztecs are down to 7 cities.
